I was down said London street last week, killing time before a train, so I thought what the hell, I'll go to that irreputable bass place where the staff are aloof and couldn't give a monkeys etc, as has been well documented on here - BUT...what is this? It's no longer there because Wunjo Guitars, on the same street, have no basses in their regular shop because they've moved them two/three doors up to where that nasty lil old bass guitar shop used to be. Was it the Bass Cellar? Well they're gone, and there's now essentially Wunjo Basses - acting as a shop all of its own. And it was a pleasure. Friendly, not terribly pushy service, chatty, in no way surly or aloof and the set up of the shop was brighter, all those amps that used to stacked in the middle all gone, and now you can see the stock clearly. Admittedly, the stock wasn't terribly out there, not sure it competes with the Bass Gallery, but I think it's worth noting as a revision; esp for when people next ask on here, "I'm visiting London, what is there in Denmark Street, is it worth going there?" I think it's improved its offer a whole lot with Wunjo doing what they've done. ** Saying all that I wasn't taking a lot of notice of prices, I had no intention to buy, but there was a new Sterling Sub for around £450 ish (??) and a Fender Jaguar for £850 ish?? Always happy to do a deal too (they offered me a bass that retails at over 600 quid for 400. But it was the wrong colour for me). They offer lifetime servicing and set-ups free of charge too. Glad to hear they've taken over the bass reigns from the miserable 'don't touch it unless you're gonna buy it', or just plain ignorant, attitude that came with entering the bass cellar. There was a 67 p bass that was a beaut and they wanted £3000 for it, a bargain these days. They also had a stripped 63 but it was terrible. Tee Posted July 23, 2012 Share Posted July 23, 2012 Yes, i noticed this a while back now. Wunjo are starting to take over the street. I actually think Denmark St is getting better now. I've also noticed that prices on some equipment is quite good. For example, in Regent Sounds, (yes i know it's guitars) some of the Fender amps and guitars are the same, or in some cases, less than internet prices. There are three basses I've been dying to try out for a while (New Dano Hodad, Hofner HCT 185 and Italia Rimini) and they had all of them in there. The prices were a little high, but they said they could do deals on all prices. It was only a flying visit but I'll definitely be going in again. Fat Rich Posted July 23, 2012 Share Posted July 23, 2012 Bought a bass from Wunjo a few months back, their price was a bit optimistic but I asked for a reduction and got a pretty good deal. Then they threw in a free strap, set of strings and a free wall hanger, plus their free setups for 2 years. Friendly, helpful, all good. Limited range, but I liked that, more specialist rather than a massive broad stroke; Fender, Musicman, Rickenbacker, a few Spectors. I'd go back. I remember a sold wood bass in their that might have been a Warwick (I wouldn't have known at the time)... I still get a thrill thinking about it - does that make me slightly weird? They were quite happy for me to noodle around on a Musicman Stingray Classic even though I made it clear I had no money to buy it. TiM was happy to knock £200 off the price even so.....shame I had no money! Highly recommended if heading for London - I will be going back! I have for an acoustic bass and really need to play before buying. (I'm not so fussed with electrics as I am happy to adjust to my style). The tall long haired guy in the bass shop was cool, and the guys in the guitar shop are also, really friendly and amenable. However, £450 for a S/H Hohner boat paddle, and passive at that? I also tried a 1974 Les Paul Custom that was beat to hell and way overpriced. but I suppose they are tourist prices. Overall though, I'm impressed.
