fatgoogle
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but ive been looking for some solo double pieces to start learning over the summer and then work on with my teacher in September. Im currently working on the duet in Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi and ive been listening to Bottesini's Elegy. Im looking for something between the standard of these pieces but say easier then Bottesini's concerto's. So i hope that gives a sort of level. Ive also been looking at simandl's 30 etudes, are these worth a buy? So in short, what are some great musical double bass solo pieces that are good for getting into that sort of territory and to get used to reading bass, tenor and treble smoothly in concert tuning. Gareth Hughes
If you get the Simandl 30 Etudes, it's worth springing for the MusicMinusOne edition which has the piano accompaniments on cd, as well as another cd with the bass parts performed too. Great for getting the intonation together along with the tempo.
Cornish Bassman
Try some of these maybe a bit further than you want to go just now but always good to push yourself and have in your collection ;-) Koussevitzky: Valse Minature Gliere: Prelude, Intermezzo. Scherzo & Tarentella (all separate) Diterssdorf: Concerto in Eb Mengoli: 20 Studies Vanhal: Concerto in Eb As you know, Bottesini wrote lots of music for Bass and are worth a look too. As I have said, these are just some suggestions of more advanced stuff that will let you get that all important practice using the three clefs . Cheers, enjoy!! fatgoogle
Great stuff thanks very much. Arent Vanhal pieces in Viennese tuning? or are there adaptions? Cheers. EDIT: Were's a good place apart from amazon to buy sheet music? Edited July 24, 2012 by fatgoogle
Cornish Bassman
You can get 'orchestral' tuning version for the Vanhal Concerto's but thats only important if you want to play it with piano and or orchestra. You can play it at home in normal scordatura Try having a look on here link to some Bottesini pieces and others ;-) http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Bottesini,_Giovanni http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Koussevitzky,_Serge http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Dittersdorf,_Carl_Ditters_von Your local music shop should be able to order music for you or I have used Kensington Chimes music shop they have a web site.
