GetYourFunkOut93 Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I am new to recording songs (Mainly Bass solos/songs I am writing) and I just wondering what DAW AND Interface is best for a midrange budget Thanks BassChatters Quote
jackers Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 my brother recently bought a Lexicon Alpha USB audio interface and it came with Cubase 5 LE, perfect for the kind of thing you want to do I would think. Quote
51m0n Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Reaper is the best bang for the buck DAW on windows and Mac IMO. Quote

You might also want to try using Audacity, which is free software and a good place to start out. It's not a DAW but can be used for home recording just fine: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ I personally use Reason as my DAW, but it's not to everyone's tastes and isn't the cheapest of the bunch (around £300) - I'm just very familiar with it and like to stick to what I know! http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/ In terms of interfaces, I use a Tascam US-144mkII which I've found to be VERY reliable for the money (around £115): http://tascam.com/product/us-144mkii/downloads/ ... however, if I was to buy a new interface, I'd probably opt for a Focusrite Saffire 6, which gets great reviews (around £150): http://www.focusrite.com/products/audio_interfaces/saffire_6_usb/ Hope that helps. And be sure you post your recordings on Basschat! There's also SoundCloud group for sharing music that you might be interested in: http://soundcloud.com/groups/basschat Quote

simonc61 Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 You might want to give this a try http://studioone.presonus.com/free/ You can always upgrade to a paid-for version as and when. I've got the full version (though I mainly use Logic) and it's as good, if not better than a lot of its competitors. Quote
charic Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Reaper gets a lot of good press on here and at a pricerange between £0 and £30 you can't really complain. Personally I found it didn't really suit my workflow though. Logic is an excellent DAW but unless you want to build a hackintosh or go right down to Logic Platinum 5.5 it's out of the question unfortunately. Cubase, I couldn't get on with and didn't have the patience to sit it out Cakewalk, I couldn't get on with and didn't have the patience to sit it out ProTools is the one for me but the price can be a fair bit higher, you can check out the cheaper protools LE versions though. Personally, I would recommend Audacity as your first step. Learn all you can with there but don't struggle with anything once it starts getting any kind of complex. As soon as you need to do something you can't do in audacity move over to reaper. This will mean that you have audacity as your backup while you're learning reaper and will have 2 programs to fall back on instead of just one Good luck! PS. I believe there is someone selling a protools 7.3 with audio interface on this very forum somewhere. Quote
I have been using this for a few months [Producer Edition] and it is fantastic ! It really is the easiest DAW in the world to use. Robust - I have not had one crash or freeze. Only a couple of downers for me - Video support is only x32 [at the moment] And no Midi score editor, again no big deal [ i just go back into Cubase for any of that stuff] For Interface - It has been this for me, solid as a rock [Roland Quad Capture] http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=1166 Garry Quote
Twigman Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 (edited) Sonar X1 producer edition is what I use - used all versions from Sonar5 onwards.....it comes in a cheaper flavour (Studio) and is simple and easy to learn. It's 64bit native too (which means projects can be huge - I now see 6-7Gb of RAM dedicated to projects regularly!) and was the first DAW to go 64bit... in the X1D release I have yet to suffer a crash! All kinds of bugs and strange things going on. But it seems to be running ok now. The Pro Channel is neat, and he loves those four extra PC modules, especially the EQ one. Good stuff. The biggest good news for me though is that Celemony have fixed the memory leak in Melodyne and after some pestering the techs there I got upgraded to melodyne2 for free!!! I am back in love with my DAW! Quote
