Excellent thread idea! I didn't even know this version existed until a few weeks ago when Brian Matthew played it on Radio 2.

If we are allowed to post our own stuff (Jake!) here is my old band's sleazy New Orleans style cover of Tom Waits' Yesterday is Here, which i am still fond of

That has to be one of the most awful covers. No energy, just the most lazy, cynical cash in ever by a bunch of talentless hacks.

The best cover of the song is, frankly, by Joni herself from the Shine album.

sorry but that album should be called sh*te not Shine

Taking of Hendrix covers, this a great version of what I consider to be a really weak original - Freedom, covered by Steve Lukather

Can i join in ?

Your both wrong :P - Orbinson recorded it first [written for him supposedly]
but it was released a couple of years after Cyndi's released version.
Not sure who wrote it.

It has a couple of duff, slow tracks but balances that with awesome tracks like Night of the Iguana and Hana.

Apparently Dylan took a lot from the Hendrix version of the song and started playing it live more like that.

Wouldnt want to split hairs, nor argue with wikipedia... which is always right :D But I clearly remember hearing Cyndi Lauper being interviewed on the radio, on a Saturday afternoon when the single was current. and stating how much she dug the Roy Orbison track, and reasons why she covered it etc etc Orbison was a little bit out of fashion at the time I think..

Well she must have heard it somewhere, but Orbison's version was released in the early 90's.

Both great versions agreed. Gues we'll never know who did what first. Couldve been in the can for yonks, put out on a sampler in the U.S, released on the back of the Willburys success, who knows.
