Morning,
another noob question here,

ive seen on a few peoples bass's they have a metalic looking cavity where the pups and pots go.

Could someone explain whats the reason behind this and what is it? how is it applyed?

It's for shielding against electrical interference, usually mains hum but also radio.
Generally copper foil or conductive paint is used, this is then grounded.
