steve-bbb
ive never seen it (on a bass) does anybody do it? does it work? (i see no reason why it shouldn't) i have an audition this evening - they want Duran/Rio - no problem I can rock the pants off it in the original key - they want it up three semitones in G
tommorichards
my mate who was in a band used to use a capo when the guitarist did because it was easier than moving the notes. he was lazy. But it did work.
steve-bbb
i dont mind transposing on the fly if its basic patterns but whilst Rio is fairly basic it is rather busy and i just dont feel the drive is there playing up 3 - and then there's that nice big fat open EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE .......... her name is rio da da dum dum dum dee dum etc etc
bartelby
Ned's Atomic Dustbin use capos on a few songs I used one until I lost it. A Kyser one... Edited July 26, 2012 by bartelby
Dave Tipping
I've used one a few times and it works fine .. mainly because I had been playing the songs for years in an open key and couldn't be arsed learning them in a different position (for one off stand in gigs). If it was a permanent song on a set list I'd put the work in.
RhysP
Martin Mendez from Opeth occasionally uses them.

paul torch
Funny, I was just thinking about this this morning. Jamming with my daughter and she was using a capo. I was struggling to transpose in my head quick enough and she suggested I used one. Got me thinking.
Thurbs
Matt regularly used one for Ned's, you can see it on the head stock here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/42/Mat_cheslin_neds_atomic_dustbin_shep_bush_dec_2009_1.jpg

I've even used mine to only fret a few strings on my 6er or 7er, which opens up some really interesting melody ideas with drone notes. lojo
Never used one on bass though I've seen it done IMO rio is one of those songs that should not be done in another key , it's one of my favourite lines at the moment I may just try what your suggesting for fun with my 6string capo for a laugh as I know the line well Doesn't that key shift make you wonder what the band is all about? Edit- just noticed the audition is now, hope it went ok for you? Edited July 26, 2012 by lojo
shizznit
My singer asked my guitar player to use a capo. His reaction was presenting his middle finger at him an said "here's my f***ing capo!". That made me giggle!
Commando Jack
Just bear in mind that if you get a capo, get something with an adjustable tension on it, because it can pull your strings out of tune. I got a G7 capo for the tele for that exact reason, but the Schubb ones are just as handy.
i think im going to go get one of those capos suggested above and have a fiddle with it - i find playing with things like that far more entertaining than trying to get decent sounds out of an octaver or synthbass pedal
bobbass4k
My shubb is invaluable now, I tune to D standard/drop C and have really heavy gauge strings on so I can't tune higher, so a capo is a neccessity if I need to play something wirtten in standard that relies on open strings. A bassist who can play Hysteria perfectly in D standard without a capo in the original key is a better bassist than I.
