Stacker Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 So, I've got a really good relic'd Jazz but I'm not happy withe the profile; it's not period correct. Finally gonna re-shape it but then thought about a soft-V Jazz neck. Some of the '50s P-basses had both soft and hard V but on a Jazz? Any ideas before I get the scrapers out?? Quote
MrFingers Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 All Jazzes have a C-shape neck, from very thin (early sixties) to fairly thick (seventies) Quote
Stacker Posted July 29, 2012 Author Posted July 29, 2012 Yeh, I know, William. I was just toying with the idea of a soft-v on this fella. It's a really good non Fender stacker Jazz but the neck profile is a bit too 'C' for me so if I was gonna take it back to vintage profile I was thinking about shaping a soft-v just for the hell of it. Stacker Posted August 2, 2012 Author Posted August 2, 2012 So, yesterday saw the spokeshave and scrapers coming out, along with the sander and sanding blocks. But as I got into the shaping I sh*t it, and just went for the same profile on my VJ reissues. Light stain mixed in with tung oil and 50% solution white spirit. Two coats and she's up in the loft to dry for a day or so before othe coats go on. Quote

Chris2112 Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Some of the old Wal basses had quite a pronounced V shaped neck, some slightly less so - they generally all feel a bit different! Not my favourite neck profile but definitely something I could live with without issue. Quote

It would not have worked. Anyway, she's up in the loft letting the tung oil coats harden. Didn't see the point of going nitro on it. Quote
Stacker Posted August 4, 2012 Author Posted August 4, 2012
is this on the bass I think it is?
Enlighten me, dear boy. Quote

Stacker Posted August 4, 2012 Author Posted August 4, 2012 No, mate, it was non-original Jazz that I bought on here a couple of years back. Very well done bar the neck profile. It's gonna take a bit of time to get the oil finish right so don't expect pix soon! Quote
xilddx Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 The V profile originally came about when Fender let an inexperienced geezer profile some Strat necks in the '50s. They put them on anyway and got some good feedback. I have a 2011 USA Deluxe V-Neck Strat, best guitar neck I ever played. Quote
Stacker Posted August 5, 2012 Author Posted August 5, 2012 (edited) Didn't know that. Sure I've got an artcle on Fender necks from Bass Player lying about somewhere. I've got 2 Strats with soft-V and a Tele with hard-V. One of the Strats is a Jap 40th Anniv and is my fav guitar neck. Edited August 5, 2012 by Stacker Quote
