karlfer
9 weeks ago got a Sea Foam FSR Precision. Last Monday a member got in touch asking to swap his American Standard, 2008, High mass bridge, graphite rodded Precision for my lovely Sea foam green FSR. Greed got the better of me, We met up, I tried his, action a little high, thought no more as I would be able to cure that. Just assumed that was the way he played. He loved my FSR Sea foam green, we exchanged. I have not informed the other member I think the neck is knackered, as it was fine when I tried it out, just the action was very high. I don't think he knew about the problem and he's a great bloke I've dealt with before. Don't want to do the embarrassing thing. Yesterday I got the time to set up the 2008 American standard Precision. Try as I might, action any lower than 6/64th's produced dead spot from 12th fret to 20th especially on the D string. Didn't seem to make any difference what I did with the truss rod. Don't think shimming it will make any difference as it will just make the top of the fretboard closer to the strings. Whilst it is an American standard, it is 4 years old and second hand so obviously out of warranty. I need to find out; A. If it is repairable. B. If I need to get a replacement Mighty Mite neck (can't afford a replacement USA Fender one). Must admit very surprised, had dozens of Fender over the years and the biggest problem I have ever had is the odd scratchy pot! I look forward to any advice anybody can give, cheers, Karl. Rumple
I'm no expert (far from it) but maybe try getting the frets dressed? along with a set up from a good luthier that could solve the problem.
Mr. Foxen
If its an American one with a dual action truss rod and graphite rods, might be the neck is reluctant to respond to the truss rod, I found a bass with a reinforced neck took time to actually shift once the rod was adjusted.
Agree with above, all sorts of things may be happening. My G&L never (and I guess still does not) liked strings that reduce to core going over bridge. 6/64 is pretty low action (by my standards), some basses just 'die' in tone with low action, some guitars the same. Choice of strings also relevant. So take to good luthier, my guess would be nothing fundamentally wrong, just needs sorting for low action. karlfer
Many thanks for the advice fellas. Going to contact Fender, see who the authorised repairer is for near Wigan. Normally Richard Thompson of Thompson guitars does all mine, but I don't want to put him in an awkward position with this one. Cheers, Karl. karlfer
Response from Fender was quick, but just the "take it along to your local authorised dealer, try fret dress before more expensive options". Thanks a bunch Fender, from a long time user and buyer. Don't try too hard will you. So, bollocks to local Fender dealer, now in the excellent hands of Ritchie Tomson, Tomson Guitars, of Wigan. Superb custom maker, luthier and all round nice guy. Oh, and 100% trustworthy. Watch this space. Or not. Karl.

karlfer
So, bass been in with Ritchie Tomson, Wigan for a week. He is a maestro. Got the call to pick it up this morning. Goes in and I'm sure I heard mutterances about baboon fisted amateur bass players . One dual action truss rod tweek, one set up, a bit of hanging off the wall to let the graphite rods re-adjust, and one bit of fret dressing later, PERFECTA CHEESE . Asked the scary question, how much???? He calmly answered that as I almost single handedly keep him employed, £35. Cheers Ritchie, baboon man will undoubtedly see you soon. Karl. THANKS for all the sage advice chaps, I'm such a talentless wuss. Edited August 24, 2012 by karlfer

Had to look again, I thought you'd said "a bit of banging off the wall"
karlfer
Cheers lads. Yeah, put him in recommended section a year or two back, he really is excellent. He has asked if he can have a look at my Yam Attitude as he's had a request to make a custom left handed one. I've gone through the spec on mine and a real one, dead chuffed to be asked to be honest. This white P was taken in a trade and I was going to flog it as I have serious Marcus Miller GAS. May not bother now .
