Happy Jack
I already have loads of Dr Feelgood, Eddie & The Hot Rods, etc. but a large chunk of my formative years has been missing for far too long. As I type this, Amazon is downloading to my PC:

Ducks Deluxe
Brinsley Schwarz
The Motors
Be Bop Deluxe
Tyla Gang
Kilburn & The High Roads
Kursaal Flyers
And it's 1977 all over again ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaDqXJjGU2g ENJOY!!!

Happy Jack
From Wikipaedia: ... on the Stiff Records label where he was an in-house producer. The single and thus the label was funded by a loan of £400 from Dr. Feelgood's Lee Brilleaux. joeystrange
Did you see the first episode of Punk Britannia on the BBC a little while ago? Almost the whole of the first episode was about pub rock so if you didn't see it you'll probably like it. If you can find it! There was all the stuff you've mentioned plus a few more. Happy Jack
Yup - saw it. Twice. Excellent program, lots of facts & history and talking heads (no, not the band!), but surprisingly little actual music. About 30 seconds of Kursaal Flyers, nothing from Ducks Deluxe, don't think I saw Brinsley Schwarz, non-rock bands like Kokomo didn't get a mention. Hence my raid on Amazon. Paul S
Forgotten bands alright. Kursaal Flyers at the Blue Boar! Be Bop Deluxe! Class act. BigRedX
Brinsley Schwarz were on - in fact IIRC it was the same OGWT clip as posted above. IMO pub rock hasn't aged very well. Most of it sounds fairly tame and weedy these days especially in light of what was just around the corner. For me it just goes to show how desperate the UK music scene was for some decent rock between the end of Glam and the beginning of Punk for most this to have attracted any kind of attention. steve-bbb
hmm yes - been a brinsley schwarz and nick lowe fan since 70s and be bop for that matter - must admit thats the first time ive heard of be bop referred to as pub rock though have said it before on other threads and will say it again ... he is one of THE musical talents of this country in recent years , amazing songwriter and guitarist in fact of all the bands ive seen over the years ive not seen a guitarist who can play and sing as well as Bill Nelson - imho he ought to be up alongside the likes of SRV and EC
bertbass
Before they were Brinsley Schwarz they were Kippington Lodge, saw them many times. Might be worth checking them out.

pst62
I didn't think Be Bop Deluxe were part of the Pub Rock scene. Dr. Feelgood, Roger C Reale & Rue Morgue, Eddie and The Hot Rods, The Pirates yeah, but certainly not Bill and the boys!
Lozz196
Can`t remember who it was, but such was Nick Lowes profile as a producer, some band used to put "This was not produced by Nick Lowe" on their records, He was everywhere in the 70s. I saw him on the Rockpile tour with Dave Edmunds - was just great.

WHUFC BASS
I always class Motorhead's first album "On Parole" as pub rock. Some great tracks on there too ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kegItmzd--o
BILL POSTERS
I saw Brinsley Schwarts on thge same bill with Dave Edmunds at Barbarellas in the early 70s, Brinsley were a bit too country for me, but Dave Edmunds just tore the place up, the guy was like a walking jukebox. Thing with pub rock, it was fun, at a time when all the 'Stars' were taking everyrthing too seriously. You cant beat good times pub bands, which is the mai reason that I'm still doing it. Spoombung
I associate Pub Rock with a dearth of interesting musical ideas and the gloom and boredom of my youth in Ipswich.

I am a big fan of Bill Nelson in general and BBD in particular. Love the bass work of the late, great Charlie Tumahai. At the forthcoming Bill Nelson fan convention along with a Bill Nelson solo set there will be a live performance from Bill and his Gentlemen Rocketeers playing many BBD and Red Noise numbers along with an improv set from Orchestra Futura with the truly brilliant Dave Sturt on bass.http://www.nelsonica.com/. The event is sold out but if you're in York on 29th September and you loiter around the bar in the Park Inn Hotel you will hear some awesome guitar playing. gary mac
Good post Jack, will have to revisit some of them. Always loved The Motors. I wanted to do Dancing the Night Away with one of the bands but the guitards declared that there were too many chords in the intro
Happy Jack
Of course, real pub rock didn't always involve bands who were famous, or who would go on to be famous. My local in those days was the John Bull in Chiswick. I saw loads of bands there, including some who became very famous later. My favourite band? I used to see these guys pretty much every month: http://www.youtube.c...e&v=x4pTfS4tBr8 http://www.youtube.c...e&v=Hsgkj3E1weE It is entirely possible that I was in the audience when these were being filmed. They may never have appeared on OGWT but they were a really great band live, if you were stood there with a can of Colt 45 and a Marlboro. A bit of sulphate helped, of course. Dunno if you've heard this before, but it's a great cover from another great guitarist who you'd think was very unlikely to cover a BBD song.
