scojack
Oi back off nugget !! (only kiddin') I reckon it could be done. This stuff is generally pretty gnarly and can require a lot of filling anyway. A bit of care and a lot of epoxy and you may salvage it. Big_Stu
Wood has arrived, only 6 days from it being posted in the US and no import duty or tax, on the down side I seem to have made a dtupid school boy error on measurements as it's not big enough for a bass
Depending on the shape you had in mind couldn't you have a contrasting border (walnut veneer, though I've got some medium oak that you're welcome to) around the body of an inch (remember them?) or so? I'm thinking...... Edited August 16, 2012 by Big_Stu
Rumple
A border is possible or maybe just a thin-ish dark one then going to the light body wood. My silly mistake has given me lots to think about. No rush though, I'm sure it will work out in the end, suggestions welsome.
nugget
how big is it?
I'll post a pic tomorrow next to my SR5 for comparison, in the meantime if you look at the picture I posted before again the centre bit is about the right length for your average bass if it was a rectangle, there's not enough to cover the top horn, hope that make sense? nugget
I see - I've had similar problem, I'll try and sketch out tomorrow what I did, might not work for you
Rumple
Here's a couple of pictures, with the buckeye rotated 180% (not how I wanted to use it) so the small end just about covers the body and the large end covers more of the horn which works better, it's still a bit short but as I'll be having a small bodied bass made with it it might just work Still interested in any ideas/thoughts guys. scojack
So Close .......I would be tempted to piece a bit in ........ Get a bit of scrap the same colour and cut out maybe with a small fretsaw. I wouldnt cut it straight. Cut out a little from the top horn area that you are extending , the same as the edge that you wil be presenting up to join. join em up and fill in the gap with some dark wooddust and epoxy. If you get a good colour match (better than my example) it will be pretty invisible imo. This sort of idea ... Rumple
That sounds just the ticket! thanks. I should point out that I'll not be doing any of this myself, I will get my trusty luthier to do the work but needed to be sure it's do-able. I'm full of ideas but no practical talent
nugget
Ok I dont think this will work for you as it really only works with square tops. It only gains a little bit but does work if the top is just a bit too short and you dont wanna compromise on the body shape. It also only really works on more symetrical rear basses such as P's not the jazz as shown below as the lower rear bit sticks out more than the top rear bit on a jazz. This (stunning sei) looks good and the top ends up being smaller than the body by quite a bit by using a thin top and heavily rounded sides
Rumple
I can see how that works on square pieces, smart idea. The way that Sei is done is really nice with the contrasting wood between the body and top wood, combined with a small body shape I think this would work for the Buckeye Burl I have. Cheers

FWIW a Sei body (as above) is a lot smaller than an SR5. Did you ever get anything done with this? Fantastic wood.

4000
No probs mate. It was a lovely bass, only sold to fund something I'd been after for 17 years.
