bremen
Useful tweak, but to be honest you got ripped off for that cap! They should cost mere pennies.
Yeah, but if they cost more they'll sound better Would be neat to use a tone pot incorporating a push/pull switch to select caps http://www.thomann.de/gb/all_parts_ap_ep_0283_000_poti_250k.htm
kevin_lindsay
Why would you want to switch between the caps? "one way makes the bass sound nice, the other way makes it sound like it's buried under a dozen duvets. Yeah, I want to keep that setiing!!! ". Hahaha Anyhow, I've still got a couple of the Mullard "tropical fish" caps left if any of you want to try the mod out. If you prefer the original "wooly" sound, it's just a couple of minutes to return the bass to it's original format.
Bikenbass
Sorry to resurrect this thread but I'd like to try this mod. Does it have to be a paper in oil cap or would any type of the correct capacitance do?
bremen
Any film cap of the correct capacitance will do. PM me your address and I'll send you one.
bremen
Also using a 6 pole means that the unused capacitor is completely isolated, Using a three pole means that the unused capacitor is still connected at one end. Wires connected at one end only are often called aerials!
Not if you do it right; ie keep the wires short.
SteveK
Just seen this thread. Had my Precision since about 1972 and never liked or used the tone control. About '82 I fitted a switchable cap - don't remember what value. Even though there's a 100% improvement, I still don't use the tone control For me, a more worthwhile addition was a series/parallel switch... now, that does get used. There's plenty of space for a microswitch between volume and tone controls, or tone and jack socket.
