Jonn0
Hey bassheads, I've been having trouble with my bass for about 3 months now and I would be grateful if you folks could give me some suggestions on what it could be. Well back in May my (beautiful) 2007 American Standard Jazz has been having trouble with its neck pickup, the problem being it's giving little to no output whatsoever. I took it straight to my local shop where the repair guy said it's most likely the pot (which came with an S1 switch, apparently they break quite a lot), so an hour later I return and the problem is solved, switch working and all. About 5 weeks later the exact same problem returns, this time when I took it back and tried to show him what the problem was my bass would play absolutely fine. He replaced the pot anyway and when I took it home the problem did not come back. At least, not until today. Same problem, and I imagine it can't be the pot this time. Could the wiring be faulty? Will I need to get some new pickups? Any advice would be much appreciated. Edited August 19, 2012 by Jonn0
charic
I wonder if they're replacing the soldering and not considering the wire. By resoldering the wire would move and potentially work again.
KiOgon
Where are you? Difficult to tell what's wrong from here if you're near me I'll have a look for you. Cheerz, John
ikay
This post on the Fender forum is about the same problem - http://www.fender.co...hp?f=10&t=45460 In this case he swapped the S1 switch out for a regular pot but ultimately discovered that it was a problem with the neck pickup. If the neck pickup is at fault then you should be getting weak or no output when the S1 switch is in series mode. When in parallel mode (standard VVT configuration) you should be getting weak or no signal from the neck pickup only. If you're getting a good strong signal in series mode then it sounds like the neck pickup is OK and the S1 switch/pot is at fault. Jonn0
I forgot to mention, there is no longer an S1 switch on my bass. The guy I took it to replaced something (forgive me I am not clued in on the technical side of things), There's a picture showing what it currently looks like, I think the knob itself is still being used with a different pot(?). http://i.imgur.com/SEaSC.jpg And John, I'm in Guildford for the next two weeks then I'm moving back to Portsmouth, your help may come in handy if the problem isn't solved by then! ikay
Can you unscrew the control plate and post a pic of the underside showing the wiring to the pots? Seeing what's going on there would help. I live about 10 miles from Guildford (on the A281 towards Horsham) so if John can't help you drop me a pm.
