I'm buying a couple of books and before I forget I need to get a music theory book. It should consist of the standard basics and then as you progress get harder. Something that should help me get my theory up as I've been keeping it to the side recently. If anyone knows or can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Mark Levine's 'Jazz Theory', even if you are not a jazz fan, covers everything and I recommend it to everyone who asks this question. There are others, though, so please wait for other responses before you commit to buying anything.
