gemdids
Evening all. I've never swapped out pickups before so please be gentle. Could someone advise if/ how to put these EMG select J pups on to a pre wired j bass control plate? They only have one wire so I just wanted some guidance before trying and potentially making a mess. http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/images/PUE/SEJ.jpg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160696836278?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 Thanks Gem
gjones
Very good question. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that one. But I'm sure somebody will be along soon with the answer.

KiOgon
If they've only got one wire it ain't going to work.
KiOgon
Show us a picture of the pick up wires & the back of the control plate - should be simples
EddyGlee
The one wire coming out of the pickups is coaxial (contains both wires)! hear is the pdf for wiring instructions : http://www.emgpickups.com/content/wiringdiagrams/SEJ_0230-0056.pdf .. diagram

Remember not to blow on the solder joints as they are cooling, tempting though it is...
gemdids
Ah ok, that makes sense then, thanks. I have the pickups already so will strip some sheathing to expose both wires. The control plate is on order from eBay so I don't have it yet. Good tip about not blowing!

paul_5
[metalurgy]The metal cools too quickly and it alters the ratio of boundary to grain during their formation. [/metalurgy]. You can form air pockets in the joint which mean that the joint is only partly holding/conducting.
gemdids
I'd assumed it was just because it weekens the joint, that's what I remember from electronics classes at school anyway.
