Hi Guys,

New to playing bass again after a 16 year break! Looking for reccomendations on amps and what i should invest my couple of hundred quid in? Should I go Ebay, rather than new?

Cheers

Welcome back to the fold!
The first question is, what sort of sound are you after? It's a bit like peanut butter... do you want smooth or crunchy? :D

Cabinet is the bigger deal to determine how loud you go, kind of a case of pick a cabinet to go loud enough and and amp for the tone you are after, although some cabinets won't agree with the tone. But cabinet is almost always the limiting factor on how loud and how low and high you can go.

GK are good amps (for the most anyway). It depends what you're wanting it to do though. Are you gigging & if so, are you using PA?

Hi,

Im looking for something to get me started again (in the house, without upsetting the wife too much), with a view to getting into a band/jam sessions in the not to distant future?

Cheers

I think it's probably a good wee combo to get you started. There's a couple of folk on here that have had/still have that combo, so they might chip in on your other post. :)

With the tiny heads and cabs you can get now, I don't think there is any advantage to a combo over a head and cab, that is much easier to bring up to gigging level, and means you can take the head and borrow a cab on the gig.

What sort of sound are you after is main thing there, start with that. Cab wise its going to be Barefaced, but which one is the question. When you say 'small' physically small, or can it be big if its still light?

For a small and loud set-up, I`d take a look at Gallien Krueger MB amps and cabs. You can get the MB200, and a 212 cab new for around £500. There should be plenty enough power there for gigging, unless in a band with a very hard-hitting drummer. The cabs are reasonably light, the amp incredibly so.

Taking the "couple of hundred quid" budget literally, you pretty much limited to the likes of secondhand Hartke, Peavey and Ashdown. The MB112 might struggle a bit at gigs, but should be usable as long as there's PA support.

Or hang on for a Peavey Mk IV and 2x15. But neither your other half nor your back will thank you for it.

The BA115 operates at 100W where as the BA112 is only 50W. 100W is a bit short for live if you're talking about a loud drummer. Rule of thumb is "generally" around 300W

How about one of these? You probably won't find one second hand yet though
