OK here's my entry. I haven't got monitors to master on, so it was done using a set of earphones.

The bass was played & recorded live & no editing done (what you hear is how it came out the amp).

Really nice! Sounds like an authentic early dubstep track (i.e. pre-Skrillex and 'brostep').

Nice lazy rhythm. The low end sounds great - very rich, although perhaps a little overly so (maybe roll it off below 40Hz? I'm listening and mix on headphones too, so I normally over-compensate when EQ'ing the very bottom end… force of habit…. so by all means ignore that comment!).

The 'live' bass blends in very well and the lead synth cuts through the mix like a proverbial hot knife.

Like I said, I'm listening on cans but it sounds great to me :-)

PS: nice to hear everyone's different styles so far! I'm still cooking something up myself, but should hopefully meet the deadline next Sunday…

Oh well....not posted much recently, but thought I would give this a go.
Each part was recorded and quickly tidied up. A tiny bit of reverb was added to the higher piano notes and a short reverse reverb piano thing added at the beginning. Probably needs the levels changing to blend in a bit better - but hey ho.

As long as no-one is expecting much in the way of technical ability, composition quality and enjoyment from this.....knock yourselves out.

All criticisms taken with the usual amount crying an childish tantrums.

Will add here:

The other entries so far have been of a good standard - some nice interpretations of the subject.

Bilbo - God that is disturbing - Are you sure that there is not a part of you that is a closet Goth

Charic - That's great - Really epic feel to it.

xgsjx - Nice take - some very clean sounds in there - nice mix.

...aaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddddddd based on my observations of the above, I should just delete mine before anyone hears it.....

I like that. Maybe needs a bit better EQing/panning on the sounds, but it has a sad Autumn feel about it.
It sounds like part of a film score. Infact, come to think of it, so do the other entries! Well if there's any film makers on here, there's a film to be made with the entries.

You are probably right about the EQ/mix/panning - it sound OKish on the cheap monitors I use. I have just built a new PC, and need to get software sorted out. It's only got Reason and the Live freebie that came with the keyboard on it at the moment. Maybe export each channel and sling them into Reaper or something. I may do that if I have chance - I promise not to change the tune in anyway other than to actually tweak the levels/panning......If that is allowed......But, as I said, it depends on if I have the time to finish the PC properly.

EDIT: I have just listened to it again while I was typing....Some things could do with levelling out - still, I don;t think it was too bad for just over an hours work.

I don't get nearly as much time as I would like :(

I think that is the problem with all of us, especially if we have to do this on top of a load of other things. The thing is, in the film world, there is a lot of pressure to deliver very quickly. One of my favourite film soundtracks is Pat Metheny's 'Map Of The World'. The whole thing was written in a fortnight.

The whole CD is marvellous but my point is that the whole thing was composed and, if I recall correctly, recorded in a week. And I struggled to come up with anything in a month and what I came up with was pathetic compared to what Metheny did. Some of these guys are monsters!

Like it! Very cinematic as folks here have mentioned. Nice playing too; the synth line makes me think of the French band Air - in fact I was picturing a cool continental film the minute it kicked in :)

Mix-wise it just needs a little panning to help 'widen' the sound (I'm listening on headphones). But no big deal.

Very impressive if that was a couple of hours! Would have taken me days of tedious sequencing to put that together.

Awesome! More entries :)

Really looking forward to having a listen through the new stuff and will feedback once I've managed to get through it without interruption :P

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far and to those who are planning on contributing/listening :D

I honestly believe a lot of composition comes from being in the right state of mind for it. If you're in the right state of mind more often (ie. it's your job) then you're going to be able to compose much quicker. Who knows, one day this thread could lead to someone starting a real film score :D

Really like this :) Great bit of groove to it, the mix seems ok on my headphones as it stands, I'll have a listen through my monitors if I get a chance :)

Another great sounding composition :)

Bit of a shame about the sudden cut off at the end. Very sad sounding and slightly eerie toward the end :)

Thanks for the feedback so far guys.

@Charic - I wanted the thing to finish on that slightly extended last note - keep them wanting more, as they say.

I meant that the note stopped dead for me rather than fading out :)

You know - I never noticed that.
I'm sure the original Reason file doesn't do that - I may have moved the end marker by mistake when I exported it..... I can re-export it if need be.

I think it's one of those things - I've listened to it so many times, I think I was starting to zone out and not hearing it properly

EDIT: I see what I did now - I added the reverse reverb at the start and didn't move the end marker to account for the extra couple of seconds I added....Stupid mistake

Here's my entry for now.

http://soundcloud.co...underthesurface

I think I MAY have been playing too much Skyrim recently
That genuinely sent shivers down my spine....

Listening to all what have been posted so far, it's incredibly surprising how differently people can view the same photo. I'd love to do something for this myself, but i don't have the equipment nor the composition skills that you guys have. I'll definately be keeping up to date with this thread though.

Might not be able to get my tune done in time... will try though. It has banjos, so counts as practice....
Bring on the banjos! Seriously.

In my teens I was in a band that featured a banjo player. He could only manage to play open E, so we had to write songs around that. We sounded like the bastard child of NoMeansNo, Half Man Half Biscuit and Napalm Death. With a banjo. True story :)
