Noisyjon
BassHavoc do make sure any song writing credits are maintained as others have mentioned. Did you have a band agreement? Was it followed? Again worth pursuing if it wasn't done properly. My Bro went to school with a bloke who was outed just like you from a band and done nothing about these points. He now has nothing from it and has to see them all over the place doing well. The band? Scouting For Girls!!!
BassHavoc
I've already told them that I want an equal share in the song writing credits seeing as I helped write the songs and they are planning on releasing the album I helped record. But I wouldn't be suprised if they tried to screw me over about that as well.
xgsjx
If they do, you could play awkward & tell them that they cannot use any of the parts that you wrote, including all the basslines.
steve-bbb
just let them know youre in a great new band..... .... called KARMA .......... and youre first original song will be called ......... It's a bitch
stingrayPete1977
It wont take long for the new bass player (or a session player) to redo all the bass lines on the album though, whether that ruins the songs or makes them better is subjective. The songs would need a bass hook something like Fleetwood mac's The Chain, Queen's Under Pressure or AOBTD to get any kind of legal challenge, its hard to put your name to inventing the major/minor scales. Any notes/tabs/lead sheets/documented music or recordings that you can proof pre-date the release of the album (I.e. dated postage to yourself or copyright dating)? If not, they will definitely just screw you out of anything you're owed. Luckily for most record labels (unlucky for the musicians), it's the original bands that tend to get caught up in the romance of being in a band with their mates, writing songs they love and having fun who forget to protect their contribution to the band. This makes them very easy to replace.
xilddx
My band, which I helped form almost 3 years ago, had been going through a bit of a dry spell (no gigs for several months) Every member had focusing on other things like earning money to help fund our first major UK tour and caring for sick relatives but we all agreed to hit the road hard come Autumn/winter. But behind my back they had hidden from me that we had been approached by a record label with some kind of deal on the condition, and I quote "They kicked out the overweight bassist" So four of my closest friends decided to stab me in the back for a shot at the big time. But worst of all they are lying to the fans and my friends by saying I left to focus on other things and that I wasn't committed to the band! Pissed off to say the least but I'm curious if anyone in Basschat land has had a similar experience.
How do you know this mate? Spike Vincent
Being asked to leave a band for any reason sucks big time and is a major blow to one's ego.Happened to me once some decades ago,the singer said to me " we're splitting up for a while and doing our own thing".Ok.What he failed to tell me that was his own thing was to carry on with the rest of the band ( who,it turned out, wondered why I left..) with his new mate on bass.Shortly after that, the new band chucked HIM out...20 years later I'm in a reasonably succesful band with the guitarist from that band, and the previous singer has cleaned himself up from the nasty drugs he was taking that we didn't know about. It's not unknown for songs to be registered in someone's name without all the others who contributed to the process getting a credit. You can raise a dispute with PRS which will put any royalties on hold until the dispute is sorted out. Sorting out whether your contribution was significant is a whole different kettle of fish though.

gafbass02
Totally sucks mate. Out of interest what sort of deal are we talking about here? Indie label? Local thing? Multinational mega corp? Or one if those people who 'owns a label'? Just wondering really, I'd be interested to see what becomes of them (hopefully nothing;)

Blademan_98
Watch the film 'The Rocker' (edit: I know he was a drummer but the principle is the same lol) You can get your revenge in 20 years time by being in a more successful band! Good luck and keep those low notes pounding. Edited September 1, 2012 by Blademan_98

However, if you want to do something about it you can. Me, I prefer to be a fat bass player (oh and bald too!)

BigRedX
Blaming it on the record label is a fairly easy cop-out for a band who want to get rid of a member... Just had a look at the the Transcend roster and there are more than a few people on there who could do with loosing a stone or two... (plus some rather nasty 70s porn star 'tashes going on) I'd say there's more to it than you are being told. stingrayPete1977
Is it possible the label only really want one of the guys and you are the first to go like this? Have you been replaced or has the label 'provided' a bass player for them?
