Lack of skunk stripe and headstock shape. Only the JV's, some of the Affinity's and more recently the CV's don't have them.
Also The headstock shape is more in keeping with an Affinity.

'Relic' instruments are getting on my nerves a bit now, especially homemade ones. I tell you what...I will see if this can transfer the relic method to other items in life. I'll leave my car under a tree for a few years, smash a couple of windows, scratch the paint with an angle grinder, place some random fag burns into the seats, deflate the tires and slap 35% more onto the resale value.

Anyway...about the bass. I agree with pst62. The giveaway is definitely the neck. I have never seen a MIJ Squire (circa '90-'99) bass with that logo on it. Also, the heel plate looks completely wrong too. Shouldn't it be bigger? MIC P's and J's are normally that small (I might be wrong, but pretty sure).

Not making any comment on what this bass is or isn't....but I thought that you only tended to get the skunk stripe with maple fingerboards, as it was necessary to cut a channel in the back of the neck to install the truss rod, whereas with rosewood, the fretboard would be lifted to install the rod.

Hmmm...I had a Silver Series Squire J that had a rosewood fingerboard and a skunk stripe. Those models were built by the Jap's in the early 90's too I think.

It's not necessary to have a skunk stripe on a neck with a rosewood board but it standardises the manufacturing process when you're also making maple board versions.

Every P bass I've owned (apart from my old Hondo II and my sadly long gone JV) have had a skunk stripe,
whether they had a Maple or Rosewood board. I've had a few cheap Affinity's that have not had the stripe.
This is the last of such, no back shot but you can see the Headstock is the same shape as the one in my OP.

The early nineties MIJ Squier basses have a black truss rod adjuster at the headstock like todays mexican Fenders. This one is natural.

I know because I have one.

Ref stripe - I've no knowledge of what goes on with various copies. But back in the days of just Fender P's and J's, all the ones with rosewood boards were stripeless.

I read it and I'm not buying his story :-) My experience was mostly of instruments from '74 to about '82 and in that period the numerous Fender Ps and Js that I was in direct contact with did not have the stripe if they had a rosewood fretboard. Sid Vicious' mid 70s precision would be an example.

In the seventies Fender did produce rosewood board basses both with and without skunk stripes. They used the 03 neck code for instruments with maple boards and rosewood board necks with skunk stripe.

In the end it really doesn't matter wot Fender did and didn't do regarding skunk stripes, as it has no real bearing on the fact that
the bass in my OP is well dodgy, and even if it did have a skunk stripe the fact remains that the headstock is NOT the right shape
to be a 90's MIJ Squier, end of.
