Highfox
I thought the Frankie and TH's Bass sounds were great in all those vids, what a great producer, arranger and musician he is/was. Never knew he played some of the stuff himself always thought he just got Muso's in for his ideas. mep
Complete bollocks. Two Tribes existed as a song long before FGTH were involved with Trevor Horn and ZTT. There certainly was a version recorded with some of the Blockheads playing on it. How much of that ended up on the actual release probably only Trevor Horn and whoever did the Fairlight programming of Relax knows. The article I remember said that while the Blockheads were more accomplished musicians than Frankie, their version still didn't have the feel that Trevor Horn was after.
Thanks for putting me and probably many others right, albeit in a very subtle way

Interesting series of vids, seems there maybe/was a CD out?
What a beautiful folk tune! Almost prog and worthy of Jethro Tull. That would make a realy good cover for someone of that ilk. Love it. Never realised that Trevor Horn was such a good bass player! A

Going from the 'Video Killed The Radio Star' video, he could have been using an Aria SB-1000 on them.
+1 Story I heard on this many years ago is that the original FGTH band were big fans of Bow Wow Wow and that the bass line from 'Pleasure Dome' is a bit of a steal from a bassline in a song called 'Elimination dancing' by Bow Wow Wow (written and played by the amazing Leigh Gorman).. I love the FGTH album and have always thought Trevor Horn is an amazing producer, but there are some similarities.. jaybass 70
Resurrection of an old thread alert !!! hi guys, Our band are going to give two tribes a go, any idea what effects are used on the bassline ? I'm playing the bass line ok but it sounds a bit flat, I have a zoom B9 so I have loads of effects to play with thanks in advance.
SteveK
I think the record had a mix of real and sampled bass, but no matter! I'd start with a bright mid-scooped preset that I'm sure your B9 has, with maybe a hint of chorus. But FX aside, for my money the most important aspect of getting the authentic 2 tribes sound is the bass and guitar getting their parts and timing absolutely nailed. Now stick fours on the floor (that's 4s on the kick drum for you non-groovers) - then watch the punters feet immediately start tapping. jaybass 70
Thanks Steve , I'll give that a go later , thought I could detect a bit of chorus too , maybe a touch of octaver ? I'm playing it with a pick and at the moment it sounds best on my Ibanez atk, I want to get it as close as possible . BigRedX
Because the version on the record is essentially a handful of single bass notes sampled and sequenced, as SteveK says it's all about accuracy of timing and dynamics to recreate that Fairlight CMI Page R feel. KevB
Fairlight vs III was about as sophisticated as they got. In the mid '80's they would set you back FIFTY GRAND Just think think what you could buy for that money back then or even now! No wonder it was mainly the top studios who had them or big established names. Engineers probably had nightmares about a cup of coffee going over one...
