The M&S ad came on, my wife said "That's a great song, who is it?", so I went on Google and found

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkKxGzm98AU

but also

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I53o0OWpZ8

which is the same track attributed to Iggy Pop (did he even record that song?)

And then this stunningly confident reply on wikianswers

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Did_iggy_pop_write_I_never_met_a_girl_like_you_before

and this

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/David_Bowie_lyrics_I_never_knew_a_girl_like_you_before

Is this the most mis-attributed song on the internet?

A huge amount of people online think that Johnny Cash wrote 'Hurt', and that Nine Inch Nails covered it, but of course it's the other way round.

yeah, i have to correct people too many times. i recorded a cover of it a little while ago, we used the nine inch nails key, and the Johnny Cash tempo, which was a mistake, because we had no singer, and couldn't use the vocals from either song. DOH!

I did hope it was getting a bit better, but maybe not. I couldn't believe the "Girl Like You" Ray Davies association, same title but obviously completely different song.

Never met a girl like you before has always been attributed to Edwin Collins.

Don't let one mis-informed YT poster make you think the whole world is wrong.

A more frequent problem is the likes of Hendrix who does brilliant reworkings which become definitive.

All along the watchtower anyone?

One of my bands does a cover of the Green Day version of 'I Fought The Law', which was made famous by The Clash and nearly everyone believes it to be an original by them - but it was originally a minor hit for an obscure band in the 60s, who I cannot for the life of me remember.

Edit - I googled it just now and found I had also miscredited it - originally written in 1957 by one of Buddy Holly's Crickets! Then later covered by The Bobby Fuller Four.
