Buy this if you have a VHS player - Danny Thompson's "Basically Speaking" £8

I bought this recently as I love Danny Thompson's playing with John Martyn and David Sylvian. It was recorded in 1991 (and it shows in the picture quality) but its really quite inspiring. Its a bit slow off the mark (reminiscences about washtub basses etc) but once he gets into playing 'Victoria' its wonderful stuff. In particular I had always wondered about his superb tone and sustain and I discovered that he raised the nut (making it very gruelling for his left hand) in order to deliver the sort of volume and sustain he gets with open strings. I reckon his left and right hands must be like Popeye's! No wonder my wimpy hands cannot deliver anything like his type of tone. Anyways for £8 its a snip, as long as you have a VHS player

Nah, I'll just wait til you've had it long enough and then put it up for sale in the Double Bass section. But then again, you might withdraw it a few days later.... ;)

I jest. Thanks for the heads up - I may well get that indeed. Scary thought with the raised nut. I've a doctor's appointment on Tuesday to try and sort out my slowly seizing left wrist. Don't think a raised nut is something I should mention as a good idea.

Mine won't be going up for sale (honest!) I actually picked mine up from a different website (was a bit pricier) but its signed by Danny on the cover :)

Ha ha, just what I was going to say! Hope the wrist sorts itself out Gareth. Broke two bones in my hand in early 2008 and am still not quite right, although perhaps counterintuitively it's less painful on DB than EB. Perhaps raining the nut could be the thing?

I enjoy the anticipation though! Please say what you think of the DVD once you've had a chance to look at it. I'm particularly interested in the man's posture. He always looks so at home and 'right' when he's playing and I think this must have a large part to play in the sound he produces. What are your thoughts?

Indeed we will.
Cameron'll have you in the New Years honours list for single handedly getting us out of the Recession. Keep it up!

Mmmmm, Clarky. Looks like Boris. In Cameron's New Year's honours list. Are we missing something?

Copy ordered Clarky, and thanks for the head's up.

ok, so how is it?

My DVD only arrived yesterday and I doubt I will get the chance to watch it until the weekend. However I assume its identical to the video in content (see OP for comments on the video) in which case it should be a treat :)

I've watched it now and will watch it again - very inspirational!

I like listening to hard-working pros like Danny (& many others) who have worked their way up with grit, determination and lots of disciplined practice - it reminds us all there's no easy way (apart from X-Factor!).

The DVD is a lot better quality than the old VHS video - love it.

I didn't realise that Danny T virtually never plays two-fingered, almost every note is plucked with his right forefinger (which is one fat finger). Like Jamerson and his claw, I am amazed by his facility given multiple fingers are so much easier to play with
