Barefootbassplayer Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Hi guys, had to show this off..... I went up to Jon Shukers place last week and spent five days under his watchful eye building my own bass from scratch. Monday it was a couple of blocks of wood but by friday evening it was fully formed and working and I genuinely could not be happier with the results! Jon is a master craftsman and even though I have had no experience of doing anything like this under his guidance I was able to produce a bass that exceded my wildest dreams! I've copied a Ritter body, thrown in the electrics from the Yamaha Attitude II and based the dimensions and wood on my Warwick FNA Jazzman. If you're interested in a top end instrument, do this course! Build your own!! Can not recommend it enough! Quote
sambucadan Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 and very nice it is to, got to have a good old look yesterday and it looks even better in the flesh :-) Quote
Dr Chocolate Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Brilliant! Well done! What top wood is that? Quote
AttitudeCastle Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Is that a set of Will Powers? Or is that a model one in the neck? Looks great man! Quote
Barefootbassplayer Posted September 11, 2012 Author Posted September 11, 2012 Flame Maple Top, Will Power neck and Middle Pick Up Quote
yorks5stringer Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Nice job in 5 days (mine took 7!). Without wishing to sound rude, does it have a finish on it, hard to tell from the photos? Quote
brensabre79 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Awesome I only heard of this course recently, definitely want to go and try - its gotta be better than the cut and shut Fenders I've been making! Quote
Gust0o Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Dude, very glad you liked it - I loved the course. Taught me a lot, including some respect, about how much work goes into producing a quality bass. I let my mind slip one morning, and ended up with a neck pocket which could only pass the Fender QC inspection Does it have a clear finish? I'm thinking, maybe, we need a Shuker course porn thread... Quote
Barefootbassplayer Posted September 12, 2012 Author Posted September 12, 2012 Its just a clear laquer finish, with the 5 day schedule Jon said you would struggle to put a hard poly finish on it due to the number of coats and drying time but I am more than happy with this as I am used to it form my warwick basses. Jon did say we could easily go back and apply a differant finish if that was what was wanted though...would just obviously add to teh price a little. I can't agree more with you Gust0o...I have teh utmost repsect for anyone who does this! I lost the router a couple of times but luckily it was early on and the marks came out with the shaping and sanding! Friday is the most stressful day!!! After four days of producing a lovely body you then have to drill a hole from the pick up cavity to the control cavity with a long thin drill bit making sure you don't mark teh front or come out the back of the instrument!! And getting the indivdual bridge pieces looking straight and level was hell!! Worth it though! Quote
7string Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 That's really great. I have nothing but respect for anyone who can build their own instruments. I can't even use a chisel let alone a router Quote
Chris2112 Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 That looks very smart indeed, well done! Quote
MoonBassAlpha Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 total props! that looks the bollocks! Quote
