Mr. Foxen
However, the lack of bridges flying off bodies means the practical advantage is marginal to nil
mart
... (you won't see cheap basses with string-through bridges).....
Except for the £60 basses sold by Sue Ryder.

BigRedX

The bridge is fine. It's the tailpiece that's the problem.
Mr. Foxen
There isn't a bridge. It is entirely missing, because it fell off due to tailpiece failure.
paul torch
There is a sticky thread on this, albeit in a slightly odd location: http://basschat.co.u...vs-bridge-only/ You will, of course, find that I gave the definitive answer on that thread. 4 Strings

Ouchee! Nearer marginal then! Thanks for the example, couldn't happen with string through, probably wouldn't happen with another couple of screws on the end that lifted. Okay, everyone with their cheaper basses with string through bridges, point taken, count yourselves lucky, but generally...! You don't get them with Highway 1 or Mexican Fenders etc.
EssentialTension
I've never been able to tell the difference ... ... but I think if there was any difference it would be less than the difference from moving you playing hand from bridge towards neck or vice versa or having a little play with your EQ. Dingus
I've noticed a difference in feel - through the body feels tighter- but not in sound. I would be amazed if anyone could really hear much of difference in tone between the two stringing methods.
4 Strings
Is a difference in tone actually intended, or is one just a better, if a little more costly, engineering solution?
