warwickhunt Posted September 16, 2012 Share Posted September 16, 2012 I just powered up my Thunderfunk and one of my Aguilar 12's in prep for a gig tonight (recent change of band so this is my first gig for a month or more) and I have the dreaded 'speaker distortion/crackling'! First thought was a blown tweeter; turned it off but still apparent. I quickly swapped the TF for my spare amp and it was still there, so not my TF going funny, it must be the cab/driver. Grabbed the other 1x12 and swapped the lead out of the back of the other DB12... distortion still apparent! The chances of either both my amps and/or both my speakers generating the distortion are pretty damn slim so that only leaves one culprit... the Speakon speaker lead that I'd been using to test the amps/cabs! I dug out another couple of speaker leads and hey presto no distortion and one very relieved bunny. Amazing how easy it is to think worst case scenario and assume it is going to be a replacement speaker or amp repair. The scary thing is that I have literally just bought a one of OBBM's speaker leads off another BCer (to upgrade my 'lesser' lead that has just failed) and it should be here Mon/Tues. KingBollock Posted September 16, 2012 Share Posted September 16, 2012 I once jumped to the wrong conclusion after I had bought a brand new 15" speaker. If I played anything below G# on the E string it farted really badly. I was gutted because I'd had to save up to buy the speaker. I went on a different Bass forum (didn't know this place existed) and complained, just for the sake of ranting. Someone suggested that it was the cab I had put it in but I said it wasn't (it wasn't). When I came back later that day there were 4 pages of people calling me an idiot and a liar! (despite the fact that there was absolutely no way for them to know what size cab I'd put it in). It turned out to be a hidden gain setting on my V-Amp Pro, it was set too high and was causing the DDT protection in my Peavey amp to cut in. I was very relieved when I worked it out. I gave up on that forum (I'd only just started visiting there anyway) and while searching for a new Bass forum I found this place, so it all worked out for the better in the end!
