ikay
We're looking for some reasonably priced powered floor monitors. Power rating around 200-300W, and say up to £250 per monitor. They're not going to get particularly heavy use but do need to have a decent sound (not cheap and boxy) and be robust and reliable. They'll mainly be used as floor monitors but will occasionally be used as a front of house vocal pa in small pub venues. Have so far found these: - Alto Tourmax SXM-112A - Samson 612M - Behringer F1320D Would appreciate any input on these - what's good and what to avoid - or other suggestons/recommendations. Cheers
crez5150
These would easily compete.... and you get a 5 year warranty http://shop.whatpa.co.uk/laney-cx12a-12-active-165w-speaker-2241-p.asp
ikay
Thanks crez5150, these look like definite contenders. May also consider buying used (ideally locally) so if anyone has anything suitable please drop me a pm
pietruszka
Ive played a gig and have used the Alto tourmax ones. Admittedly it was a restaurant type gig and only vocals were through it, but they sounded great, really really clear. I'll be following this thread as my singer is after a monitor. ikay
Thanks Dan, I like the look of the Altos and that's good to hear. We'd also be using them mainly for vocals plus some sax/clarinet and in similar conditions.
pietruszka
You shouldn't go wrong with them then, they're plenty loud enough and really light. By which I mean you could pick them up with your toes. Dan
Phil Starr
thought I'd posted earlier but it doesn't seem to be here. We're looking to upgrade, we have the Laney 12 and our keyboard player had a Laney 10. they are cheap and reliable but the vocal sound is pretty poor to be honest, hence looking to upgrade. I was looking at the Wharfedale EVP's in a shop in Bristol which are well spec'ed for the price but the sales guy said the Alto's sound better, I didn't have time to check this out but if I do I'll get back to you. Our singer uses a Yamaha Stagepas 300 for her vocal monitor. Sounds good and is very compact and comes with useful mixing facilities (4 mics + 2 line) for the smaller gig. The only problem is the output is limited at 112dB which is struggling if you are very loud . Let us know how you get on
ikay
Thanks Phil, the feedback on the Laney is very useful re poor vocal sound. The Stagepas 300 looks interesting. We're not loud but 8" speakers and 150W a side may be just a bit on the light side. Neat package though, I'll add the 300 and 500 version to my short list. Monckyman
I use the Alto 15s a lot as floor wedges and they are quite useful in a loud scenario.
JTUK
We use Wharfdale 15's at times as wedges and they are ok... wouldn't really want to use them FOH, tbh. If you want to double, then I think buy decent and buy them once Something like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RCF-ART-Series-322A-Active-Speaker-PAIR-/130767890891?pt=UK_ConElec_SpeakersPASystems_RL&hash=item1e725fa9cb The 10's are VERY pokey and will do small pubs and loudish units. They wil run out of steam with a full on-band but then you will really have to know your P.A by them anyway. For a cheaper option, try EV SX300's... again decent but not for LOUD bands. I'll look into the 310s as well but unfortunately most RCF gear is beyond our budget to buy new.
