SpanishBass
Have you ever heard 'Sometime World' by Wishbone Ash, on the Argus album? What a great bass line and what a great tone! Martin Turner must be one of the most underrated bass players in the UK! Check out Sorrel on Wishbone Four too. Martin plays a Gibson Thunderbird, which has a wonderful growling tone. He was a great influence on me as a teenage bass player, along with Stanley Clarke .... and several other great players!

Count Bassy
Martin Turner is great. I love the bass solo at the beginning of Handy (from the album "Wishbone Ash")
franzbassist
Good shout! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvLVSPPLZZY The cool bass kicks in around 2.48 for those that are interested! One of the first basslines I ever worked out. Tricky to play and sing, and the bass tone on that album is fantastic. And welcome to Basschat! Vinny
'Throw Down the Sword' is one of my fave tunes to play, just haven't managed to convince other people to play it with me yet! Check out what MT's doing on 'Leaf and Stream' as well, there's a lot more going on in there than meets the eye. (ear?) Anyways, that's tomorrow morning sorted - I'm gonna have a crack at 'Cosmic Jazz'!
Bassman Sam
Martin Turner was a huge influence on me too. Wishbone were one of my most seen live bands in the '70's.

gary mac
Argus is one of the few 70's albums that I still regularly play. I have the special editiion, with bonus tracks on my i pod. Crackin' bass playing and sound throughout.

KevB
Are there any decent music books for WA with good bass transcriptions? I don't recall seeing one and though I've tried to work out a few bits of some of their songs it would be nice to have something more definitive. Norris
I have an Argus mug at work - and nobody gets the reference Martin Turner is still touring lots - see http://www.wishboneash.co.uk/default.aspx. Bad news for me, 'cos my band doesn't get to gig when his does due to a shared guitarist

I'm always on the look out for good music books. Dot or tabs, but preferably both! I wouldn't hold out much hope for WA transcriptions though. I did loads of on line searching to try to find some Free* transcriptions, and couldn't find anything apart from Alright Now. So I don't think we'd be in luck for WA as they are that bit less mainstream. *As in the band - not as in free of charge!
seashell
Ooh, and while we're having a bit of a Wishbone Ash bass line love fest, how about this: Edited to say: Sorry for 3 posts in a row, but any WA thread is bound to send me into a bit of a frenzy! vsmith1
Off to see and hear Wishbone Ash next month in Kendal, but as I read stuff that is the band with Andy Powell but not Martin Turner. Now I have mixed feelings.
Cosmo Valdemar
Argus is definitely one of my favourite albums in every aspect, but particularly Martin's incredible Thunderbird tone and playing - Sometime World should be far more well known than it is, such a fantastic bassline. WIshbone Four has some great basslines and tones, particularly the aforementioned Sorrel, but ropey production and slightly lacklustre songs let it down. "Interesting" fact - MArtin's tone is the sound of the Thunderbird neck pickup only, sent theough two amps - one clean and bassy, one toppy and driven. I recently saw MT's Wishbone Ash and these days he's using a Hartke head for the clean lows and an Ashdown ABM for drive, all through Ashdown MAG cabs. He also had a Blackstar pedal for boost when soloing - sadly he buggered up the solo to Why Don't We, and looked rather annoyed with himself. Soundwise, it was his classic tone through and through. SpanishBass
Yes, Andy Powell is a fabulous guitarist. It would be great if Wishbone Ash reformed with either Ted Turner or Laurie Wisefield! Both existing versions of Wishbone Ash are very good in their own right but I feel that they won't EVER be as good as Wishbone Ash with Andy Powell AND Martin Turner.
