BassBus
As an addendum to Bilbo's thread GOD.....I LOVE JAZZ. Not every jazz fan is going to be a fusion fan so maybe it needs its own thread. You decide. I know there are a few fans of the genre on here so what are your fave tracks/bands. I'm on a big Gary Willis kick at the moment so here's a Tribal Tech 'tune' to start off. urb
I love some fusion - not all - a great recent-ish album for me is Ranjit Barot's Bada Boom - amazing Indo-jazz mash up of tons of great stuff - Indian classical, jazz rock, funk, big band, konokol, tablas, and some of the finest musicians on the planet, not least Barot on drums - Matt Garrison, Wayne Krantz, John McLaughlin and tons more - I love this album. BassBus
I like the sound of the Ranjit Barot stuff. Good cross of rock, jazz and Indian flavours. Keep them coming.
xilddx
I detest most of it, but I love Holdsworth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzW3yzxc7TY

BassBus
Big Holdsworth fan too. My first taste of this stuff was in 1979. McCormack's Music (RIP) hosted a Fender roadshow. The band included Felix Krish on bass and Allan Murphy on guitar. Still remember it to this day and that sound has stuck with me.
BassBus
I detest most of it...
It's always going to be love or hate with fusion. It encompasses so many musical approaches, as the name suggests. Funk, world rock, jazz, Indian and loads of others. But then I suppose that's the same with most types of music.

BassBus
There are a number of Jazz Fusion compilations on youtube and one threw up this with some nice fretless on it. BassBus
Now this really does it for me and an all star lineup. risingson
The term 'fusion' tends to send a shiver up my back. But you can't go wrong with a bit of Weather Report. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThF63iql478&feature=related
Chris2112
I love fusion. This may be my favourite bit, from 05:46 to the end. Absolutely stunning stuff. Great melody, beautiful playing from all three musicians. Shawn Lane just takes flight on this one. As perfect as music ever gets. That little lick Lane starts at 07:26. Bloody hell. This band just made everything else seem obsolete. Angel
Yeah, big fusion fan. One of my favourite bands of the genre is Chris Poland's 'Ohm". They are just a 3 piece, so lots of lovely bass right up in the mix. Song here, but no 'video' content:
Bilbo
I went through this phase..... What hindsight tells me is that a lot of this stuff suffered from a superficiality that meant it struggled to live up to the standards of great Jazz and often lacked the musical interaction that, for me, defined the greatest Jazz. Lots of fusion suffered from 'look at meeee' excesses in place of decent content. But there is undoubtedly some great stuff out there. Personal favourites include Nova's LP 'Vimana', Al DiMeola's 'Soaring Through A Dream', Chick Coea's 'Light As A Feather' LP, his first 'Elektric Band' LP, the first two Tribal Tech LPs ('Dr Hee' and 'Spears')... Yeahn, some great stuff and a great gateway to proper Jazz but there was a lot of 'fluff' in there too.
Yeah but Rob... there's a hell of a lot of fluff in 'proper' jazz too... and just about every other genre for that matter - bad fuzak is admittedly horrible to listen to - fill in your own love-to-hate them name here - but there's an equal amount of non-committal by the numbers bebop/hard bop players / acts around too - they just sound less obtrusive etc. Anyway I agree with you - I just think fusion gets a bad name and let's face it, 'fusion' as a concept is every where now, not just in music (be it food or design) but at the quality end of mainstream-ish music pretty much every artist is using lots of different genres in their stuff now - which is what I thought was the original idea of fusion - to fuse together different sounds and styles - why it went down the Olympian virtuoso route I don't know - but as just one example someone like Jaco was into myriad styles - plus he was technically advanced - hence he gets labeled a fusion player... anyway I love some of it (like most other styles) but not all of it (like most styles). Keeping your ears and mind open is always good eh?

BassBus
...and it's almost as if the names of some genre, like jazz, are hijacked, in a sense, to gain some credibility. I often hear the name jazz banded around in some pop styles and I'm hard pushed to hear any jazz in it at all.
The term 'fusion' tends to send a shiver up my back.
That's exactly the love/hate thing being mentioned. I get the same feeling when I see someone with their thumb up ready to slap a bass. Perhaps this thread will open some players' minds to some of the good stuff around. funkypenguin
Keep the videos rolling in!! Im a big fan of Guthrie Govan, as a player and as a writer. I'm in the middle of transcribing the bass part for this tune for anyone that likes it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks1qSYBun2E A good friend of mine (also a stick player) introduced me to Greg Howards music a few months back, here's my personal favourite, Still Water http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWqO2T0bh7w
RoRi
I think there is a difference between 'fusion' and 'elevator music'. IMO this is fusion: This is elevator music:

bluesparky
Nice thread, thanks for giving me some more stuff to check out and listen to. I've tried to take in all of the "God I Love Jazz" thread, but as there's so much to wade through and so many points / issues & selections of music have been made it's a mammoth and daunting task, so I gave up trying to read it all! - I wonder if it's worth creating a sticky, lockable thread which has the "best of" information and advice from the "God I Love Jazz" thread? Just a thought..
