If I may be so bold.

My own tone on this track. It's very gritty but not over the top. Gibson Grabber to VT Bass Deluxe.

Can't beat a grabber - Thrice and Cave in both have amazing bass sounds.

Mine is a bit neglected these days.....this was a while ago https://soundcloud.com/wedigforfire/throw-out-the-cards-live-corp

Custom Grabber into Line 6 DM4 into SVT3.

Got to give another nod to Peter Steele's tone with Type O - with that warm, thick distortion and the hint of phaser, his tone was like nobody else's. The ultimate bass "rhythm guitar" tone, in my opinion. And also thanks for reminding me about Love Your Money by Daisy Chainsaw - proper slashed speaker filthy distortion. :)

Another vote for John Wetton on Red, phenomonal tone.

Very partial to Jared Warren's sound with Big Business and the Melvins, I believe it comes from judicious use of some form of Brassmaster.
G.C Green of Godflesh - lovely thick sound out of his Boss HM2.
Aaron Dallison of Keelhaul - pretty sure it's just an SVT pushed to submission but when he digs in, fuggeddaboutit!

...Chris W - Hysteria

There are too many to choose from but this has to get my vote, I've seen Muse 3 or 4 times and when that riff starts the gig goes up a gear for sure.

Instantly recognisable within the first 3 or 4 notes, when you hear that intro, you KNOW some serious rock action is about to take place.

Exciting!

Forgive me - pure self-indulgence but, my bass sound in 1992 is my fave if I'm honest.
My PBass straight through a cranked Laney DP150 into a MAJ 4x10 - 2 mics in the sound room and a DI blend - even a wah-wah solo in the middle. :P

I uploaded this from a digital recording of the only cassette I've got of this.

Jason Newstead's bass sound on the three Voivod albums after leaving Metallica. Excellent tone and more importantly, after his tenure in Metallica, you could actually hear his bass lines.

+1 to this

I have just nailed the bass sound for my band's latest release. I play the drums, not bass, but I record and mix it. The bass is a squire bronco I bought from someone off here, Neepheid I think? Anyway, I thibnk you'll agree, this is the pinnacle of dirty bass sounds. https://soundcloud.com/rifffactoryrecordings-1/creepjoint-bass-invader

How did you get it to sound like that?

Whoever I bgouht it off had upgraded the pickup I think. New strings, Behringer BDI21 driven quite hard, then split into 3 channels, one for big fat lows, one for the horrible nasty clanky highs, and one for distortion which I cut out for the verses.

But yeh, it's a squier bronco through a behringer pedal DI'd :)

Thanks!
I did think it had a kind of Sansamp tone to it. So the distortion comes from the BDI21? Or did you use any other pedal?

a small bit of dirt from the behringer pedal, yeh. No other pedals. In the verse section the only dirt is coming from the BDI21, but it's not that dirty. In the other heavier sections the extra distortion channel kicks in, and that's an old Cubase plug-in called Quadrafuzz. I've always loved that plug-in as the filters are very useful. Normally I'd have sent the signal out to a chain of pedals and spent hours tweaking them but I decided to try Quadrafuzz and it works really well
