Hi Sutty,

First: welcome to the site. Should you decide to stay, you'll find there's a lot to learn here.

Cheap bass: avoid a bad bass, as in a bass that is not properly built and set up. It will ruin your joy and your progress.

Really good stuff:
Yamaha RBX 170, or if you go up a little in price also the Ibanez basses. Reportedly the RBX beats the equally priced Ibanez.

A little more expensive:
Squier VM series
Squier CV series
Many say also the Squier Affinity is good, but I personally have negative experience with how they were screwed together. May have been unlucky.
