OK here's mine. It's call SHlTSHOERIOTFACE and it's inspired by badly dressed riotfaces.

VERY nice! Love how it changes from "in your face" rock/metal to mellow dub around the one minute mark. Totally caught me by surprise and the change works really well. I mean, two genres in one track isn't something you hear often! Clever stuff. And the playing is great (you're pretty damn handy on guitar as well as bass, assuming that's you on both?).

The production sounds good too (I'm listening on cans). Nicely mixed and you've got some lush FX going on, especially in the dub section, which really fattens up the track.

In all, good job Silddx! You've set a very high bar for the rest of us.

I've yet to start mine but will be doing so next weekend. I've got something going on in my head, I just need to 'splurge' it out somehow ;)

I must admit, I'm stumped by this months picture.

^ Damn. Sorry guys! Maybe I should've picked a different image? Or maybe take Dave's approach (above) and drink some cider for inspiration! :D

Awww! don't start talking about alcohol.....I've been tea-total for the last five years - bloody depressing it is too

Don't worry about it mate, there's always next month if I get really stumped..... :)

silddx: really liked it. The first part really caught the pic for me and I liked the aftermath as well. I might have a go myself but it won't be that good!
Thank you mate! Just have fun and see where it goes. If it's a true representation of yourself and your musicality, that's as good as it gets. Best of luck.

Hey thanks for the kind words man! I'm really pleased with it. It's just me, guitar and bass (through a POD X3 Live into Reaper) and drum programming in EZ Drummer. It all started with that rapid-tremolo guitar part. I thought of heart palpitations and I set up that patch on the POD X3. That led me to the next bit and so on and on. It just came out and it's definitely me  I grew up on prog rock and dub :)

Looking forward to hearing yours!

I am still thinking about it but have realised that my small number of VST drums sounds don't work for rock music so my rock guitar sounds (Pro-Co Rat) overwhelm them to the point where the end result doesn't sound remotely rocky an my composition doesn't work. May try something else and see what I can do.

What is interesting is the fact that trying to work to the image instead of to my comfort zone, forces me to look not only at the notes but also at the timbres, genre etc etc.

I think the cider will win :D

It did, it always does.
It did again this afternoon....
All I have so far is some weird noises I sang into my phone while I was walking the dog on the moors yesterday morning, must put them into my fingers and get started properly soon.

OK - here's mine - fock knows what you'll think of this - all done very quickly on a Sunday while cooking dinner in between takes :)

Edit: this is a rough first draft - there are a few things I want to add and it badly needs a remix - but hope you dig some of the ideas...

I am only putting this on here to show that I tried but I have given up (its taking too long and I can't play the instruments well enough to make it sound 'proper!!)

Here is my effort to do it with found sounds (I was being ironic!!)

Properly grungy! Reminds me of Butthole Surfers :) Nice L/R panning. My only suggestion would be to introduce a slamming drum track at some point - the click/hi hats you have going kinda builds anticipation for a beefy kick drum & snare that doesn't materialise… but then I'm a sucker for massive drum breaks!

Wow, great playing as always Mike! This is really quirky. The crazy phasing/distortion that rips it up around the one minute mark and towards the end is great. Sounds nice and clear through my cans too. Goodness knows how your Sunday lunch turned out, but this rocks!

First prize for the best track title! This one makes me nostalgic for early 80s metal. Nice riff, suitably dirty-sounding and the solos definitely say "Rrrrrock!". The crash cymbals sound a wee bit overbearing to me, but I appreciate you didn't get round to finishing it. Still, you're clearly a metaller at heart, Bilbo :P

I got the arse because I was going to put vocals on it but needed a mic lead because mine had died and I don't want to have to go out and buy one this month and my compressor was arsing about and I couldn't get the guitar sound I wanted for the lead (which was a total botch anyway) and the drum sounds were sh*t so I compressed them and added some gain so the drums sounded great but the cymbals were too heavy and, somehow, in the wrong place and .....

You get the idea

You might find this handy...I know i does for me.
It won't help you write notes and make you a million $'s,
But it sure helps complicate matters.

Cheers dude - I'm not happy with the mix and there are a few finishing touches - but considering I did this track from scratch on a Sunday afternoon - starting with the drums and a big heavy riff in mind - I'm quite pleased with the results - everything was composed out of 'necessity' i.e. I didn't have time to spend too long on any of it - although I had a vague 'concept' in mind... anyway I hope the finished version will be a little better.

Thanks for the feedback...

Mike

Hello mate. That has the punk vibe! I agree with skol, you should look at the mix a bit and get some heavy drums on it, but I don't know what recording set up you have and that may not be easily possible.

Do you record on a computer mate? You may find EZDrummer is your solution. It's cheap as chips for what you get, and the basic one comes with a rock kit and a cocktail kit for your jazzy excursions. It's about £55 I think. Don't give up!

Hi Nige
That is your old headless performing :)
I used my trusty Yamaha keyboard to get the drums.
I didn't know we could remix! I will have another go at the weekend.
(by the way, Hazel is looking at universities for next year to do a degree in fashion for performing arts!)
how time flies :)

You know what, I had a feeling it was :) It has a certain tone doesn't it. And I can't see any problems with remixes or even a whole new composition, we all change our minds constantly about music :)

Great news about Hazel mate! Give her my best wishes.

That's a lot better! That distorted phased bass sounds very like something on Caress of Steel by Rush. Can't remember the track but it really is very similar! Great stuff man!
