ML94
Hi Guys As part of me taking Music A level it requires that I do a 6 minute long solo piece performance. This can be broken down into 2 pieces which equal 6 minutes or at the maximum 3 pieces. Also after that I need to do an ensemble performance which lasts roughly the same time as the solo performance. (2 CONTRASTING PIECES) What I'm stuck on is choosing solo pieces They have to be at least a grade 6 standard. What I thought was playing some Vic or Marcus stuff and getting it in but that sort of stuff would be better with ensembl-y type of stuff. What i came up for the solo pieces were Portrait of Tracy - Jaco Amazing grace - Vic And that's about it. The ensemble stuff I can sort out with the other guys so no hassle there, although your welcome to suggest something suitable. Cheers Manraj
Bilbo
Those two are the ones everybody does so I woudl discount them completely (but that's just me). Try one of these Prelude to Bach's Second Cello Suite (in D minor) Level Pegging by Dave Pegg Dave Holland's arrangement of 'Mr. PC' or 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' Jonas Hellborg's arrangement of 'Blue In Green' Jaco's arrangement of 'Naima' Jeff Berlin's arrangments of 'Dixie', 'Tears In Heaven' or 'Imagine' That's about 15 years work. Good luck
funkypenguin
If you have a 6 string, try john patitucci's Tone Poem

mrpink1991
Dune Tune - Level 42 Also, open up a fake book on ANY PAGE. You've got a world of solo arranging right there.
cris the man
I did this not too long ago I'm now in the corps of army music and we regularly perform to each other. Some really effective solo pieces I found in a book called 'effective etudes for jazz'. They contain some really melodic baselines on some great jazz tunes such as how high the moon, cantaloupe island etc. really worth buying, have a look , top tip though, try and avoid portrait of Tracy. Everybody plays it, see if you can find a hidden gem of a piece

GonzoBass
Jonas Hellborg's arrangement of 'Blue In Green'
Excellent, this one!
Jeff Berlin's arrangments of 'Dixie'
Uh huh... "All Blues" can be done nicely as a rhythm-and-melody-at-the-same-time solo piece, if you transpose it to the key of A, which gives you open string possibilities. Just a suggestion... You might also want to look up Michael Dimin- http://www.michaeldimin.com/. He has some great chordal pieces that aren't too difficult to master, including "Autumn Leaves" and "The Shadow of Your Smile". He's still the king of the four string chords IMHO and a really nice guy to boot...
