TimR
They're is some weird stuff going on with autocorrect at the moment. Earlier on I wrote their instead of there in a thread and I'm one of those people who hates it when people don't know which one to use. Wayne that's a good one, I think you went in for the kill a bit early, could have been worth some mileage. Anyone else bored going to have a go? Just about any other legendary metal band? And Maiden have even got three guitarists, FFS...
I personally have never seen the point in a second guitarist. I don't really like the bands that you have mentioned. I would add another instrument instead - keys or horns perhaps - even a backing singer. I agree there is always an exception - Thin Lizzy for example - but generally not for me.
Some bands do use 2 guitarists to really good effect, but it's getting 2 guitarists that can compliment one another & knowing when not to play, which is hard! Most of the bands I've played in with 2 guitarists have been a bit noisy as one of them tends to noodle all the way through the vocal parts as opposed to doing something creative (not all have been like that though). Low End Bee
Two guitarists works well of they're very different and give each other space. The Clash and the Members for instance. I don't like any of your list TB13

The Dark Lord
Quite a lot of exceptions : Judas Priest (Rose tinted glasses. If you go back and look and listen to these people, you'll realise they were awful. Would sound better with no instruments). Iron Maiden (A bit noisy) Metallica (Very noisy and hairy) Lynard Skynard (Hippies now in nursing homes with their fans) Green Day (Doesn't need the other guy who doesn't do much. Great band though). The Pixies (Who?) Talking Heads (My Byrne is a hero, Tina is accidentally the hottest thing. Doesn't really need two guitars this stuff. Great band) G& R (Other guy does crash chords) My Bloody Valentine (Who?) etc etc although in fairness it seems to work better in rock
I jest (mostly) ...... as I said, I'd rather do it a different way. Most of us on here (I suppose) play the pub / club circuit. With a live drummer in a pub / club, there really is no need for a second guitar to fill the sound. It is very rare that I see a second guitar that is doing much to justify being there. Just not for me.
