Stance Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012
It has been done a few times, But I'll add my usual list. Mike Watt Rob Wight Andrew Weiss
MIke Watt made me become a bassplayer - I loved his line on Brave Captain - It was the only encounter I had with his music back in the day, as a kid watching Santa Cruz sk8 movies-just amazing! pietruszka Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Yeah this topic has been done, but cant come to any harm can it! I'll stick with my choice of Mark White, from the Spin Doctors. And I keep forgetting his name but the bloke in Costello's Attractions. Phil France from the Cinematic Orchestra is a great player to listen to. Dan Quote
Conan Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Colin Moulding from XTC. David Margen from Santana. Quote
Dave Vader Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I will always say Glenn Cornick from the original Tull lineup. Every time this topic comes up Quote
Low End Bee Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 We've had this before haven't we. My take on this is. If you're not an underrated bass player you're probably doing it wrong. Who cares what others bass players think. It's the listening public that matters. Quote

spongebob Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 (edited)
David Margen from Santana.
A big +1 on this! I can't find much about him - but love his Santana band work, and during same period on Carlos' solo stuff. I he is on 'Oneness' (great record) and parts of 'The Swing Of Delight' (brilliant as well). Whist on a Santana vibe, I'd throw in Doug Rauch - I can listen to the live triple 'Lotus' (yes, triple) album all day - mesmerizing music, and Doug is just on fire. Stance Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I forgot to mention Brad Smith (Blind Melon) - Great tone and great lines! Quote
joeystrange Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I second Krist Novoselic. I heard some Nirvana multitracks and there are a lot of subtleties that don't come through on the record. He's one of my favourite players. Quote

Lfalex v1.1 Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 Are that many of the above underrated? Anyway, I was listening to some Jane's Addiction today, and was liking the way that the bassist, Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins all manage to give each other space... all at the same time. So here's a mention for Eric Avery (in case I forgot him earlier!) Quote

stoker Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Dave Pegg from Fairport Convention is a fantastic player as is Rick Kemp from Steeleye Span. I've always rated Stuart Fletcher (ex Seahorses) very highly too! Quote
