Underrated Bass players

Great thread!

And really nice to see some of my favourite players mentioned..

Trevor Boulder (from his David Bowie days)
Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper)
John Gustafason (Roxy Music)
Barry Adamson (Magazine)
Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)
Leigh Gorman (Adam & The Ants/Bow Wow Wow)
David Margen (Santana)
George Murray (Bowie '75 to '80)

These players and their basslines are part of my musical DNA for sure..

Have to agree also about Prince, and on that note, what about Stevie Wonder?

Lastly; 51m0n - that's amazing about Joe Osbourne! I had no idea he played with these artists on these two tunes:

America - Ventura Highway
Art Garfunkel - I Only Have Eyes For You

I love those two songs!

Do you know if he played on America's 'Horse With No Name'?

Oh for sure man, that album (The Aura) blows me away! Gonna pop it on in a sec actually.

I guess Steve DiGiorgio has already been mentioned, as we have a fretless bassist in metal posted here?
MOAR fretless in metal I say MOAR!!!

Another vote for someone mentioned earlier in this thread and who was completely known to me, Philip Bynoe.

Saw him playing in Steve Vai's band last night and he was tremendous. Had all the technique, played lead lines, excellent tone, immense groove etc. but somehow just always played the right thing at the right time. Classic case of knew what to leave out too and not over do parts. Awesome.

Anyone mentioned Adam Blackstone yet? Ridiculous New Jersey player who is literally MD'ing for everyone big right now. Done a lot of work with some of the bigger hip-hop guys.

One of the most legendary and iconic bassists of them all, seldom gets a mention, especially on this side of the pond...Carol Kaye. She has played on some of the major hits of the 60's with bands like the Beach Boys ( that's her bass line on the intro to "Good Vibrations"), and also played on a lot of Motown hits. As well as this, she has played on countless film scores and theme tunes to TV series. At around 75 years of age, she is still going strong and is as busy as ever.
thought it was glenn campbell that played bass for them on that as he took over from brian wilson.she played a lot of glenn campbells stuff like wichta line man...

It is Carol playing on "Good Vibrations". There is an interview on You Tube where she talks about this. Yes, she played on a lot of Glen Campbells music too.

Must be true so. It would not be the first time that there was confusion about
what recordings Carol Kaye played on !!! :D

What's so sick? It's a wiki about death, not everybody is squeamish about death. The obituaries thing is a little odd, but as they point out, news organizations routinely prepare up to date obituaries about prominent people so they can put them out instantly when that person dies, surely it's no more ghoulish than that?

Who´s the guy that played on Wham records? Last night I heard (again) "wake me up before you go-go".

I love the tone and the bassline itself!
Deon Estes played on most of the Wham stuff, although I think it might be Jo Dworniak who played bass on "Club Tropicana"?

Glenn Cornick (Jethro Tull) was a big influence on me at one time. Another not much talked about name ( at least as far as his bass playing is concerned) is Peter Cetera. His work on the early "Chicago" albums is just amazing.

While he is better known as a sax player, Wilton Felder ("Crusaders") doubled on bass on a lot of the early "Crusaders" albums. Anyone needing a lesson on how to hold down a groove, should have a listen.

Granted these guys are not contempory players. However in their day they were among the best bassists, and I'm sure could still give the younger guys of today, a run for their money. ;)
Agreed. Glen was great. Cetera is thought of more as a singer but is a really musical player. And Felder played, "I Want You Back", which is good enough for me.

I would add Zack Merrick from All Time Low. In general, pop-punk doesn't get mentioned on here much, but Zack is a really talented bass player and adds some really nice bass lines fills to ATL's songs.

If you watch/listen to stuff from their live DVD, you can see alot of the embellishments he adds to lines.
