lefrash
Anyone tried one of their Jazz bass kits? Right at the bottom of the page. http://www.diyguitarshop.co.uk/kits.htm £130 at the moment. Seems quite an inexpensive way to getting a starter pack for a DIY jazz! The body seems quite nice, and at that price you could keep the bits that are fine, then sell on the bits you dont want and recoup some of the cost. After going through darkheart's Jazz on a budget, this has really got me hankering for a wee project! I was thinking about just picking up a cheap jazz copy of gumtree... but at the end of the day, I'd just end up with a cheap bass with nice pups! haha I know there are DIY kits on thomann for a good bit less but they come with a basswood body... I quite like the grain on these beasties! Any thoughts? Worth a punt you reckon?

mentalextra
[sub]I have also pondered on getting a kit. There are a few other suppliers that have some interesting kit projects as well.[/sub] [sub]The body, neck and hardware are pretty sound and obviously they use there bulk buying to get the price down. But, I would need to hear the pups as they are not a branded item and if they need updating could well bring the price of the kit way above £120! [/sub] [sub]Just my opinion, no harm intended![/sub] Edited October 3, 2012 by mentalextra
lefrash
Yeah, I'm assuming the pickups are nothing special, And I'm assuming the hardware is all pretty low-end too. I wouldnt mind plunking £120 on it, then just adding the extra bits as I find them cheap. An extra £100 could easily be spent, and thats taking it up to Squier Jazz region. BUT on the other hand, I'd have something that noone else will have and it will keep me occupied in the cold winter evenings! OOh, this looks interesting AND actually £120 ( + £10 delivery), on offer! Need to reshape the old headstock though - unless you like it unshaped . Anyone any views/experience? Chairleg
This is one of the Jazz kits from diyguitar I assembled and finished last year. The hardware is nothing to get excited about but it is funtional. I fitted Wikinson WBJ series pups because I had a set spare and they sounded better than the ones that came with the kit. The strings that came with the kit were just plain nasty, it's now wearing Fender flats. The body turned out to be 4 part construction with a confused (my best stab at a description) grain. I ended up using Danish Oil as a finish because aerosol paint hates me. The neck is fairly decent but it 'aint much like a Jazz. Mine is 40mm at the nut. The last (or probably first) thing to consider is; with the covers fitted, this dainty little beast weighs in at a full 11lb. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ykgZ_TekmoHxcTVmTFQCptMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink I really enjoyed putting this kit together, it's a good way to gain a little experience and there is a great deal of satisfaction from owning and playing an instrument that you assembled yourself. All the best Mark.
lefrash
That looks lovely! It might just be a good photo, but the body looks great!
