tedmanzie
Dusty Springfield - Ain't No Sun SInce You Been Gone This track basically convinced me to take up the bass fairly recently (i've played guitar for ages). Wikipedia tells me this is John Paul Jones, which was quite a surprise! I don't know much about bass or bass players. Does this busy kind of bassline on a pop/soul record have a name / a playing style? Or can anyone point me in the direction of similar basslines, songs, players etc. I like that driving lots of notes sort of thing, but without it getting into muso world (no offence). Is this a P-bass played with a pick? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfo_PFwYpvQ
lowdowner
Great track - not sure I can answer the questions as well as others on here, but the bass line is somewhere between funk and soul (to my ears). In fact, it's very close some James Brown funk, and more 'recently' to The Meters (listen to 'Cissy Strut' amongst others). Can't tell whether it's a pick though - it would certainly be possible finger picking which is what most funk is played with...

Simon.
I really like that Dusty track in the original post, but for me, when it comes to Piece Of My Heart, nothing can compare to Erma Franklin's original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejjjne_Mua4&feature=related A voice to really touch the soul! Does anyone know anything about the bass player on that version - Sam Dixon?
