terryblyth
I've finally dipped my toe in the water, and bought a cheapy over t'internet purely to build up my strength and chops on the basis that if I take to the instrument, I can buy something decent. I've read the threads on the dangers of starting off on something cheap, but unfortunately can't blow a lot of money on something to try out at this stage. As the bridge obviously didn't come attached to the bass, I'd quite like it to have the once-over to set-up action and to make sure the soundpost is behaving as it should. All roads so far have led to Malcolm Healey, but when I phoned up I got told somewhat abruptly that he wouldn't touch it, as it's "a cheap, internet bass". jakenewmanbass
Welcome to the world Terry, you will find that attitude quite a bit from luthiers. In my experience they are all pretty busy so want to work on the higher spec instruments, presumably for more money. There is the sound post in Guildford he may give you the same answer as Malcolm, and my favourite Roger Dawson over in Greenwich and a few others around London. What is the instrument? is it new? requiring a first set up? PM if you want some numbers Jake
bassace
You could try Peter Tyler in Maidenhead (not quite Surrey). He is a very kind chap and perhaps not quite so precious as some of the other luthiers. If you offer him an 'internet' bass to work on he'll probably cough, smile indulgently and then get on with the job.
Bilbo
There is a guy called Paul Herman who used to live in Epsom. He used to work for Wal and did mine as few years ago. Look up Herman guitars on the net and see if he's still around. Tell him Rob Palmer recommended him (he'll say 'who the f*** is Rob Palmer'?)
