I should have said over 35 only as after that it ain't as interesting!

I'm on the look out for a nice jazz bass and stumbled across a bass for sale in The Gallery, it's Yolanda Charles' sonic blue '65 jazz, it's had a refinish and it's the year I was born, sonic blue is my favourite colour as well, but a serious amount of £££

Anyone done it, the post 40 indulgence that is owning a bass from your birth year!

Yep, 1963 Precision - re-finned in oly white (all-original was out of my budget). Imported from US by BC's Si Clifton. Absolutely gorgeous, worn-in neck and rich woody tone. I just love it

Any 1965 bass is always gonna be a lot of ££, but that one is probably 2k over what Inhave seen them at, I was told she ain't 100% on selling it!
I bought a bass guitar mag this week and she is playing it in an advert in the mag!

I've danced around it a lot. I was born in '73 & aside owning a '71 Antoria Jazz I've owned Fenders from '76, '78 & 79. My girlfriend's Dad owns a P-bass from '73 though...so I'll probably have to marry her!

I'm not sure Yolanda's bass is really 'for sale' - it's just listed at a silly price just in case someone with more money than sense comes along :)

The problem I have with a YOB bass is that I'd need a late '59 and I'm very much a J player than a P. To the best of my knowledge there was only one prototype J ever built in '59 & that's the famous Herbie Flowers Lake Placid Blue one :(

I do, however, own a very nice replica of Herbie's bass and have just picked up a '65J in LPB as well. The '65 is nice but my Sea Foam Green '63 is nicer so not sure how long I'll keep the '65.

Well now, I used to think if I got a '64 Jazz in shell pink or gold flake, it would mean I would be the porn star's bollocks. But you know what, I tried some old Jazzes, and some were just about ok. But I realised that if I was going to do this I would paying a small fortune to drive a pale blue three wheeler in the F1.

So I ended up with a Warwick Streamer ChromeTone made 40 years later. I call it my 'year of RE-BIRTH' bass, the re-birth happening when BC member Dominic brought it to my house last year and I handed over eight hundred smackers. Let me tell you, it pisses all over the good '64 Jazz I played, and it's still got a '4' in it :D

A guitarist friend of mine has a 71 Jazz bass which is my birth year (all original bass too!). He bought it off the bassist with the London Philharmonic back in the early 80s for £50. He also has a matching P bass from 73 (he's a Fender collector & has 30 + guitars).

What was good in '92?
Not much.

Ibanez SoundGear. My main bass is a '90 SR1000E.

I set out to buy a tidy looking 69 Jazz but when I tried it in the shop it was junk.... completely lifeless, very heavy and had an unpleasant honk. So it didn't just share a birthday with me but other characteristics too.

The shop also had a scruffy 72 which was stunning so I got that instead.

It would have to be a 64 for me as well, I can't see me ever seriously gassing for one that much, if someone wanted to buy me one, or I suddenly had a load of cash I didn't know what to do with then it might be another story..
A sunburst would hit the spot, but then again I'd probably not like to gig it or want to take it out anywhere, so it would just be for the pleasure of looking at and picking up once in a while.

But why not, we only live once. (That I know of)

1964 Precision with a maple board = ££££££££s, so no, don't think so...

Yeah, even shifting a bit to 1965 = still no chance :(

I was born on Saturday 29th December 1956, so all the basses made in my "year of birth" had already been made by the time I was born.

So I bought an April 1957 Precision as being the closest I could get.

As a bonus, as near as I can make out this bass came from the same batch as Bill Black's ...
