I'm on the look out for a nice jazz bass and stumbled across a bass for sale in The Gallery, it's Yolanda Charles' sonic blue '65 jazz, it's had a refinish and it's the year I was born, sonic blue is my favourite colour as well, but a serious amount of £££ Anyone done it, the post 40 indulgence that is owning a bass from your birth year! molan Posted October 6, 2012 Share Posted October 6, 2012 I'm not sure Yolanda's bass is really 'for sale' - it's just listed at a silly price just in case someone with more money than sense comes along The problem I have with a YOB bass is that I'd need a late '59 and I'm very much a J player than a P. To the best of my knowledge there was only one prototype J ever built in '59 & that's the famous Herbie Flowers Lake Placid Blue one I do, however, own a very nice replica of Herbie's bass and have just picked up a '65J in LPB as well. But you know what, I tried some old Jazzes, and some were just about ok. But I realised that if I was going to do this I would paying a small fortune to drive a pale blue three wheeler in the F1. So I ended up with a Warwick Streamer ChromeTone made 40 years later. I call it my 'year of RE-BIRTH' bass, the re-birth happening when BC member Dominic brought it to my house last year and I handed over eight hundred smackers. He bought it off the bassist with the London Philharmonic back in the early 80s for £50. He also has a matching P bass from 73 (he's a Fender collector & has 30 + guitars). So it didn't just share a birthday with me but other characteristics too. The shop also had a scruffy 72 which was stunning so I got that instead. Highfox Posted October 7, 2012 Share Posted October 7, 2012 It would have to be a 64 for me as well, I can't see me ever seriously gassing for one that much, if someone wanted to buy me one, or I suddenly had a load of cash I didn't know what to do with then it might be another story.. A sunburst would hit the spot, but then again I'd probably not like to gig it or want to take it out anywhere, so it would just be for the pleasure of looking at and picking up once in a while.
