MoJoKe
OK, so I have just started playing with a Kate Bush Tribute Band, and need to add some string and possibly horn sounds to the mix. I could do this with my Roland stage piano and mainstage, but I don't really want the extra clutter on stage if I can help it... anyone got any thoughts on how best to do this with bass (and preferably fairly cost effectively initially!). I had thought about the Roland VB kit but not used it before, but is there an alternative out there? Also, if I put a roland pickup on both basses would it track properly on the fretless? (my Boss GT6b doesn't!)
crez5150
Do you not have a keys player in the band? I would have thought that essential for a KB tribute act?
BassBus
The Roland pickup works fine with fretless. Gary Willis uses one to great effect. If you want a slightly cheaper option why not look at the Roland GR-55. Basically a stripped down VB-99. Tracking is fine the further up the neck you go but on lower notes nearer the nut there might be some tracking problems. No tracking problems at all on modeled sounds though. As we probably all know a huge amount of her work is/was keys and sampled (she's well recognised as having been one of the worlds best Fairlight programmers), and this is quite difficult to achieve well with only one keyboard player. He uses a Hammond and a Roland stage piano with mainstage, but we are still missing out on some of the important textural stuff.
Kiwi
Taurus pedals would be the most practical option. MIDI them up to the module of your choice, and your hands stay free.
BassBus
Good point but very expensive. Cheaper option would be Roland PK-6 http://www.dv247.com/computer-hardware/roland-pk-6-dynamic-midi-pedal--93729
