Angel Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Been listening a lot to RHCP and Jamiroquai recently. I'm looking for recommendations for albums from other artists with similar funky bass styles. Any suggestions? Quote
morsefull Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 The Sunburst band. Incognito. Reel people. That should be enough to get your teeth into Quote
BassPimp66 Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Stefan Redtenbacher Funkestra / Hausmusik is pure funk madness. Quote
paul_5 Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Brand New Heavies too, I think Andrew Levy (their bassist) plays on the first Jamiroquai album too. I'd also consider Herbie Hancock's 'Headhunters' essential listening for burgeoning funkateers. Quote
Roland Rock Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 The Meters' 'Rejuvination' Parliament's 'Mothership Connection' Quote
Highfox Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Sly and the Family Stone, for old school funk, rock, groove. Quote
Bo0tsy Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 +1 for Parliament Mothership Connection, ....Parliement's 'Funkentelechy vs The Placebo Syndrome is equally is good. Bootsy's first 3 albums: 'Stretchin' Out (In a Rubber Band)' , 'Ahh The Name is....Bootsy Baby', and 'Player of The Year', Funkadelic - 'One Nation Under a Groove'. Sly and the Family Stone - get a best of compilation to get you started - 'Essential Mastercuts' or 'Greatest Hits' Brand New Heavies - 'Brother Sister', 'Get Used to It', 'Shelter' etc. Slave - 'Definitive Groove' James Brown - 'Make It Funky: The Big Payback' or 'Funk Power 1970: A Brand New Thang' Quote
Angel Posted October 15, 2012 Author Posted October 15, 2012 Thanks all - plenty to be going on with! Quote
51m0n Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Betty Davis - Betty Davis (Her first album had Larry Graham on bass - legendary...) Check out the Funk and Groove thread for a frankly enormous selection of groove and funk bass playing. Quote
spongebob Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Any Chic album. The James Brown box set 'Star Time' covers his career really well, loads of single-only stuff you'll struggle to find elsewhere. Quote
thisnameistaken Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I think Incognito are a bit too clean-cut personally. Parliament are like funky brainwashing they are amazing. Actually Bootsy's last album (Funk Capital Of The World) is very good too, some great stuff on there. Quote
bengovier182 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Any bootsy, larry graham, flea, mark king (for some slap) Paul simon has some excellent bass lines, 'call me al' Ben. Quote
patch006 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) Not classic funk but check out electro deluxe especially the live stuff on utube. Edited October 15, 2012 by patch006 Quote
Doddy Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012
Any bootsy, larry graham, flea, mark king (for some slap) Paul simon has some excellent bass lines, 'call me al'
Paul Simon does have some great songs with great basslines ('Slip Sliding away' being my favourite),but they aren't exactly funky (neither is Mark King...I don't think). For some more modern funky stuff check out some Me'Shell NdegeOcello(especially her first 2 albums), Raphael Saadiq (Tony,Toni,Toni) and Pino's playing with D'angelo ('Voodoo'). The John Legend/The Roots album 'Wake Up' has some funky stuff too. These aren't old school funk like Parliament or Sly,but they've got the whole funk/hip hop kind of vibe. I also notice that nobody has mentioned Graham Central Station or Tower of Power yet (if you ignore the fluff, there is some really funky stuff there) Quote
risingson Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Herbie Hancock's Thrust, Mr. Hands, Man-Child albums. Probably the funkiest you can get, Paul Jackson, Freddie Washington and Jaco on bass to name but a few. Quote
ScreencastTutor Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 How about some Pleasure or Delegation - definitely some nice bass lines going on. Quote
thisnameistaken Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012
For some more modern funky stuff check out some Me'Shell NdegeOcello(especially her first 2 albums), Raphael Saadiq (Tony,Toni,Toni) and Pino's playing with D'angelo ('Voodoo').
These are good suggestions if you like that bare bones nu-soul sound. It's pretty interesting from a bassist's perspective actually, you have to do a lot with very little. Quote
Gunsfreddy2003 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 The Sound Stylistics, Papa Grows Funk and Tower of Power would be my recommendations! Quote
dmz Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Stanley Clarke has released some great funky pop albums over the years - Time Exposure, Find Out - you could also try the Clarke/Duke Project albums - 1, 2 or 3 - most have been re-mastered recently too. Definitely worth a punt ! Quote

jaybass 70 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 This is a good compilation CD http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Best-Disco-Demands-Collection/dp/B005LLXBYA lots of good funky stuff that you wouldnt normally know about on one album, if your on Spotify you can play it for free as well as listen to the excellent Basschat compilation, lots of good funky bass gems on there too. alstocko Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Incubus have some pretty tasty basslines. Look up "Are You In" and "Look Alive" is a rockier number Quote
