ML94 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Hey guys We all love Marcus for what he's currently doing as the 'Mainz' man in his band but there is a lot of more Marcus stuff that I haven't really been introduced to. His session work was at the same level as his performance now, as they tell me. What I really have put this post up for is that, does anyone have certain albums or recommendations for albums to listen to that feature Marcus playing as a sideman and not as a main performer ? I've had a look around and found maybe 4 or 5 recordings with different artists but I'm sure there's more than that ! Anything to listen to would be greatly appreiciated ! Cheers Quote
BottomE Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) http://en.wikipedia....i/Marcus_Miller It has a list of everything hes played on. Personally, i love the Grover Washington stuff. Something really cosy and warm with his sound and the whole period. It's all great the guys a living legend. Edited October 15, 2012 by BottomE Quote

lowdown Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) The Dave Grusin album 'Mountain Dance' is great. Nice Fretless from Marcus, and a lovely melodic solo in the middle. Dingus Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) Check out "The Man With The Horn " and "We Want Miles" albums by Miles Davis for Marcus Miller at his very best. All the more amazing when you think how young Marcus was when he made these records. Edited October 15, 2012 by Dingus Quote

Pete Academy Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Listen to the opening track, Children Of The Night, on Wayne Shorter's High Life album. The bass part is remarkable. Marcus said it ran to fourteen pages of manuscript and was a real challenge. It is a great part. Quote

The fasting showman Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 Totally agree with Dingus regarding the Miles albums, the track 'Fat time' has an amazing sound and feel, I think he was playing through an SVT then. I've never heard him sound better. Quote
zero9 Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 I always liked 'Adrenalin' from David Bendeth's album of the same name. Couldn't find anything on yootoob, other than this geezer playing it (more of a MK impression mind): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROp50u_SojQ Quote
robholloway Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 I have a slightly obscure gear related question, not sure if this is the right place for it but nonetheless... Recently purchased a Marcus Miller Sig 2002 model, it is "Made in Japan" as opposed to later models which have "Crafted in Japan" on the back of the neck. Although the grain of the timber body is visible through the lacquer I would describe the colour as more "honey blonde" than natural. Are the earlier versions 1998-2002 different in finish to the current model, which appear more grainy? Or has mine just faded with age? It's a great bass obviously, purchased via Andy Baxter Bass who has some fantastic gear in his emporium. cheers, Rob. Quote
