Dood
Currently I use a pedal compressor and a half rack EQ in my rack system. The most annoying thing about these 2 items is that they are the *only* items in my rack that require a 'wall wart' adaptor. I have to have all sorts of extra junk in the back of my rack to accomodate them.. soooooo I'm after one of these or similar:- http://www.ashly.com/retired/product/r-dpx-series.htm It's easier to click the link than for me to post all the pics. Some are rather larger. Both units pictured feature a graphic or parametric EQ and a full spec compressor in a single rack space powered via a normal IEC mains lead. So I am looking for either one of those, or if you guys (and glas) know of anything similar/ the same as. Preferably staying away from those wallwarts! I *could* go for 2 half racks, but again this could double up on leads etc.
The Funk
Most 1U Channel Strips contain compression and EQ - but you already knew that. I'm sure there's a way to avoid or bypass the preamp stage. A friend of mine is planning on using a 1U Focusrite channel strip as part of a live acoustic guitar rig. If you want something that is literally just compression and EQ, I'll have to have a look around for you. Dood
woh! That multiband comp is just gawjuss! what a monster! You are right.. I would need anothe rack for that one too! Yes, as you have mentioned, the channel strip is certainly a possibility and am looking at those too. Cheers!
Stewart
If I could justify it, I think I'd go for one of these: http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/fl...3928/a/r/e/base Looks pretty nice too
Dood
yeh, like that one too.. I was just looking at the DBX 376 tube channel strip.. it features an SP/DIF output that would chain straight into my TC Effects unit!! talk about OTT!!! lol lol
Stewart
Hmm - it's nice, but it hasn't got the words FAT or FUNK on the front....
The Funk
You can't argue with that reasoning
Dood
if only it was spelt PHat PHunk! ;o) I have just found a website with a list of 'channel strip' manufacturers as long as ya arm.. it's gonna be a long night ha ha
The Funk
You could always get yourself a Neve. I've always thought that Neve is short for "you will NEVEr be able to afford this". Edited June 19, 2007 by The Funk
Dood
so expensive, that the company would rather not tell you anything tangible about them.. the website did not like my browser either!
slaphappygarry
Dood, i have used some TL Audio stuff and dont like it too much. It made stuff quite muddy. I have heard other reliability probems about them too (although everyone i know with them has not had too much bother).
Dood
Cheers G! it looks like they haven't quite got what I am after too, so they are kinda ruled out anyway. As it happens the Ashly (100 version) could well be spot on. I like the 20Hz high pass filter on it. very handy!
slaphappygarry
http://www.apiaudio.com/7600.html Awesome piece of kit that http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/fl...7099/a/r/e/base Again. Now, although these cost a fortune, i bet either will be the last thing you will ever buy being up there in some of the best studio outboard money can buy. The Funk
You could just take this to a gig along with a power amp and your cabs, in theory. I could find a price for you. Edit: Hah, it's £1450! But, it's built by the engineer for Decca and is developed from their own studio gear. Dood
You guys are awesome.. do you know how much money I have just mentally spent!!!!!
The Funk
Around £10,000? Why does all the great kit have to be so expensive? I'd love to try out the Drawmer valve multi-band compressor above.
Dood
Because they are all built in a magical land where even the dreams are to be paid for! ridiculous in my view!
The Funk
Yeah, it's very frustrating. I think a decent 1U channel strip would probably strike the best balance between price and quality. Would the EQ/Compressor go between your pre and power amp?
Dood
Would the EQ/Compressor go between your pre and power amp?
Yes. It would also play the job of a dedicated preamp as well. Compressor > preamp > FXloop> EQ> Effects > Loop return > Power amp or Compressor > EQ > Effects > Poweramp. My FX unit has a dedicated section that has been designed to drive a poweramp directly, which is rather handy!
slaphappygarry
with the likes of the api or neve you could just bin your pre. The Funk - you played with any the drawmer valve compressors? I used the 1968 dual valve fella the other days and it was lovely. Really subtle but effective compression. It amazed me that, the more you spend of compressors, the less they sound compressed and sound more natural if you get what i mean. The S3 looks like it should be in a Tank. Hell, it probably was.... velvetkevorkian
A Boss VF1 from eBay is a good bit cheaper, and would replace your current EQ halfrack neatly. The bass "algorithm" includes a compressor and a four band totally parametric EQ- there's also a dedicated 10 band EQ algorithm. Just thought I'd lower the tone a bit on this high end outboard gear orgy
Dood
pretty much! I'm just investigating building a new psu box with an IEC socket on for my existing EQ. It works fine, it's just the wallwart that looks like a bl**dy babies head which gets in the way.
velvetkevorkian
Ah s**te, forgot about the wall wart thing. I guess on gear that small (half of 1U) it would be impractical to put a full size power plug in.
