Warmoth Jazz 5 - swamp ash/zebra wood top. FINISHED!

I have all the parts to get building this now. Custom nordstrand pickup came along with the hipshot bridge and string retainers. Still need to order the z epoxy. Thinking I might go with a natural finish, not sure I can cover any of that grain with a brown burst.

I was looking at doing something similar to guitars attached...what do you think?

Sorry this has been a slow build. I've been waiting on some parts from Best Bass Gear that had to be custom ordered from hipshot and Nordstrand. Here is a sneaky peak at the body with the parts on. I think I'm going to just put on z-epoxy to enhance the grain and slightly tint it, and then spray clear lacquer over and buff to a gloss....decisions decisions....

  • 2 weeks later...

So far I have drilled the holes for the controls(will post pics soon). Not much else to report, holes for neck bushing are getting done by someone with a pillar drill. I tried and it didn't go so well, so he's re drilling them a little bigger.

I'm thinking about making a control cavity out of zebra wood. It would be a out 3mm thick, would zebra wood be stable enough at this thickness?

Thanks.

Managed to get some zebra wood from Jon at Letts guitars. He's a top bloke. So once I get this from him, I can start to apply the z-poxy and take some more progress pictures. I know that's what you all want. It's taken longer than I thought to get this all going. Sorry :)

First coat of the Z-Poxy has been applied. I started with the back, because I've not done it before, so any mistakes i may make will be hidden. :)

The last photo shows the Amber hue this stuf has and I'm really happy with the first coat, swamp ash really does soak everything up. Will wait for that coat to dry then ill do the front tomorrow. :) So I may have a picture of the front tomorrow. :)

There certainly is a knack to it. I didn't have a clue either! I built a fretless jazz, and finished that myself. I made loads of mistakes, but learnt so much doing it.

Also, if you're unsure about something, loads of people on here to help you out! Try get a body, preferably Alder as you dont need to grain fill it and have a go. I started with using Nitro Laquer, and followed this;

If I have one bit of advice when it comes to finishing, its take your time. If you rush a step you pay for it a step or two later and you wont get the results you want. I'm going to stop waffling now...so yea you should give it a go. :)

Sorry it took a while, but here is a couple of pics of the forst coat of Z-poxy on the zebrawood. It still needs to be sanded, should be able to do that soon...i hope! Loving the amber hue of the z-poxy and is really easy to use, after a bit of trial and error. :)

I got a wooden control cover back from Jon from Letts Guitars. He's done a top job with it, im very happy with it. I also sent him a picture of the top and he's matched it really well.

Thanks :)

I can't wait to get this built, I have to stop myself rushing it and possibly ruining the finish.

No problem, I'm in exactly the same boat with my build, I have to lacquer the neck but I need it to be about 12 degrees consistently!

Yea meant to say. Your build is looking really good! I have a bass I'd like to de fret, I'll do it when I get the courage to do it. Luckily my girlfriends dad is a paint technician, so I'm able to use their spray booth! He also sorted me out one of his old spray guns. :)

Im not trying to be a stick in the mud or anything but would the control cover not have been better matched to the wood on the back of the body? the front looks gorgeous but the back looks like a bitsa  sorry :( ill run and hide now.......

I like the continuation of the zebrawood theme. Yes, the cover could have been wood to match the back or another type of wood. It beats nasty black plastic. Run and hide! Run and hide!
