Bass_In_Yer_Face Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Just had my IPOD on shuffle and 'Boogie Oogie Oogie' came on by A Taste of Honey. The tone of the bass on that track just makes youur teeth rattle. Played by Janice M. Johnson. Can anyone recommend anything else she played on or other female bass players worth checking out. 2 Quote

I met her at NAMM some years ago when we (Martin Sim and I that is) were working with Dan Lakin of Lakland basses when we did an inlay with her initials on the fret board back-lit by SimS Custom L.E.D.s. Apart from being (obviously!) very beautiful she had the tiniest of hands and fingers and still could hold down tremendous grooves! Get playing those Talking Heads CDs!! Ciao Ian Quote
BossHog Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 My vote 1 Gail Ann Dorsey, as of Bowie, Tears for Fears, Gwen Stefani fame as well as her own material. Great player, great voice. 2 Lydia Kaboesj can be seen on numerous posts on YouTube, I saw her playing at the Frankfurt Musikmesse this year, she's fantastic. 3 Tal Wilkenfeld, she's in a rhythm section with Vinnie Colaiuta at 21 years old!!! Adrenochrome Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 ...other than those already mentioned: Kim Deal, and Kim Gordon. Quote

Solid and tasteful, and some great lines, but not technically great. I don't know, I'm torn. I have though been considering the idea that if you want a great alt-rock band, get a girl called Kim on bass Quote
MacDaddy Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 The Bitch on Bass, from Rockbitch. Played a fretless and did an awesome bass solo which included lotsa slap! Quote
Kiwi Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Meshell will always get my vote for this kind of thread. Rhonda Smith This is Divinity, Beyonce's bass player doing her own thing. She's pretty awesome but very raw. Not everyone's cup of darjeeling Quote
Dood Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Melanie C's ole bass player, Kim Khahn.. Awesome 'in the pocket' player and sings awesome harmonies at the same time.. GUH! Makes you sick ha ha!! Err, Julz Ruzicka too.. just for playin' with style.. I think she is playing with ex-SikTh Mikey's 'new project'. Used to play with Million Dead, I understand. 2 Quote

But these three are amazing though; Tina Weymouth for playing stuff no-one else in her area of music (i.e. 70s american New Wave) was playing at the time Carol Kaye, who's discography speaks for itself Gail Ann Dorsey who has played in Bowie's band for years! dangerboy Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I am only allowed to vote for my girlfriend. She doesn't like me thinking about other girls who play the bass. Quote
clauster Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 (edited) +1 to Tina Weymouth Also Clare Kenny (Shakespeares Sister, Aztec Camera, etc, lots of session work). Edited May 8, 2008 by clauster Quote
jakenewmanbass Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Has to be Me'Shelle for me, fabulous groove, using the language of the whole of bass history and making it sound entirely her own. Now thats an artist. Quote

clauster Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I remember seeing Me'shelle on The Tube years ago doing a bass and vox version of Bobby Womack's "Walk on By". Talented lady. Quote
yorks5stringer Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Anyone else ever see "Single Bass": she was called Jennifer Moore from around Nottingham way, maybe 10 years ago? She used to sing and accompany herself with lots of Jaco type slaps, chords and harmonics. I've still got her tape somewhere, "Be Your Friend" http://www.single-bass.co.uk/ Quote
