I agree PJ, Tal's one of my favorite players and also Midus Guerreiro(you spelt it wrong, not Guerriero but Guerreiro, check www.myspace.com/midusguerreiro) I saw her playing, the other day with Aynsley Lister band and what a great gig!Man, she' got a lot of power and her voice sounds great too!!I'll be going see them again next year on tour.

JoJoBass on this server used to be Aynsley Lister's bass player. Strangely, I used to play with Aynsley at jam sessions at the Running Horse in Nottingham when he was in his teens. His Dad used to bring him up from Leicester on a Monday evening.

I Can't believe there's only been one call out for Kim Clarke of Defunkt so far! She plays really interesting funk grooves, and is about the only one in the band that really nails their jazz numbers when the rest of the band frankly sounds like they're struggling.
I can't remember hearing any other girl bassists playing slap in '81 either.

Also, I nominate Bilbo as the best carrot-holding bass player out there. Bar none.

agreed,sounds like someone with a good memory for patterns(Modes) just dropping notes all over the place and getting lucky,every few bars.Good party trick prodigy though.Prefer meshell myself,shame shes not better looking.

I'm sure there are many women out there who would be offended by having a man tell them what is discriminatory against them and what isn't. It's a mile-deep argument, and until someone starts claiming that female bassists are inferior to male ones, or only interesting if they're attractive, surely it's not really a massive problem? After all, half the problem with '-isms' stems from them being pointed out when they're really not there.

Personally, I find listing bass players by gender as pointless as doing it by hair colour, but as she doesn't seemed to have been given a mention so far, here's to Aimee Mann. Her 'Whatever' album is one of my faves of the 90s.
