PJ Phillips
Great bass players all! What's the deal with Carole Kaye ... Did she play on everything? I think she may have been credited with a lot of Jamersons sessions - could never figure it out! I love Me'Shell and also the amazingly fearless bass playing of Tal Wilkenfeld. She is a rock! Also, may I add Midus Guerriero who is fantastic and also a great singer and finally the beautiful Gay-Yee Westerhoff (cellist from 'Bond') who is a monster funky electric bass player too. OutToPlayJazz
Gail Anne Dorsey and Divinity.
Oh yes, I'd quite forgotten about MC.Divinity. She tours sometimes with the Victor Wooten band. Quite a tidy player. It's Tal all the way for me, though

Overall depends on whether looking for best ' solo / muso / tech ' female bass player or female bass player in the best band. Kim Deal in the Pixies - not overtly technical - but there's no-one male or female who would be ( have been ? ) better in that context. There should be gratuitous pic of Suzi and the Fonz around here somewhere - best female singing acting bassist ?

bassbluestew
I think the Jamerson / Kaye thing is a WHOLE BIG topic on it's own. Looking at some US sites they get VERY het up over it. S
molan
Ok, so this may be a little controversial but I really like Michele Stodart of the Magic Numbers. No clever technical stuff going on but I just love some of her ideas and the patterns she plays, really suits the band's sound and actually quite fun to play along with. First album and demos are my favourites. Here she is playing live : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYTocYnxWYE Not particularly fluid and the tone is bit dead but something about the bass line just does it for me PS - if you want to hear the 'produced' version of the same song it's here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-7Japu-MdU...feature=related Edited July 5, 2008 by molan
That's one of the things I quite like about all of them, a bit on the large side, lots of hair, no posing fashion stuff & churning out great little pop songs Found another live version of the same song with much better sounds from Glasto a few years back : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYtZ5LNd8tQ Edited July 5, 2008 by molan

Bilbo
I refuse to engage in this debate as it is, by its very nature, sexist. A players gender is of no relevance to his or her playing. You'll be asking who is the best gay bass player next. The best Muslim player? The best Socialist player? The best player over 65? Nonsense.
