Haven't you already made this joke in another thread?

As funny now as it was then ;-)

+1 here. Very nice bass lines.

and, is it Christmas yet? Sod it, I'm not waiting another 5 months .. Tracy Wormworth's greatest hit (IMHO)

"Since the demise of the Waitresses, Tracy Wormworth has probably been involved with more high profile pop records than any other band members. Her list of credits include Sting, Wayne Shorter and B52s. "

One player I'm looking forward to hearing more of is Julie Slick, who's in a power trio with her brother Eric (drums) and Adrian Belew:
Great bass players all!
What's the deal with Carole Kaye ... Did she play on everything?
I think she may have been credited with a lot of Jamersons sessions - could never figure it out!

I love Me'Shell and also the amazingly fearless bass playing of Tal Wilkenfeld. She is a rock!

Also, may I add Midus Guerriero who is fantastic and also a great singer
and finally the beautiful Gay-Yee Westerhoff (cellist from 'Bond') who is a monster funky electric bass player too.
I agree PJ, Tal's one of my favorite players and also Midus Guerreiro(you spelt it wrong, not Guerriero but Guerreiro, check www.myspace.com/midusguerreiro) I saw her playing, the other day with Aynsley Lister band and what a great gig!Man, she' got a lot of power and her voice sounds great too!!I'll be going see them again next year on tour.

JoJoBass on this server used to be Aynsley Lister's bass player. Strangely, I used to play with Aynsley at jam sessions at the Running Horse in Nottingham when he was in his teens. His Dad used to bring him up from Leicester on a Monday evening.

Rich.

carol kaye, meshell and tal wilkenfeld win for me.

wilkenfeld is not just "the best female bassist" but one of the best all round bassists imho

It all depends what is meant by 'best' I guess but I'd say Carol Kaye for the extent of her influence.

The First Lady of Bass

Let's not get into the Kaye/Jamerson debate again.

Yep, Tina Weymouth and she can dance at the same time.

Oh and Yolanda Charles

I Can't believe there's only been one call out for Kim Clarke of Defunkt so far! She plays really interesting funk grooves, and is about the only one in the band that really nails their jazz numbers when the rest of the band frankly sounds like they're struggling.
I can't remember hearing any other girl bassists playing slap in '81 either.

Also, I nominate Bilbo as the best carrot-holding bass player out there. Bar none.

I watched the Jeff Beck thing on the telly a few weeks ago and, after all I'd heard, came away dissapointed by Tal Wilkenfeld

Meshell kicks Tal's arse.
IMO of course.
I refuse to engage in this debate as it is, by its very nature, sexist. A players gender is of no relevance to his or her playing.

You'll be asking who is the best gay bass player next.

The best Muslim player?

The best Socialist player?

The best player over 65?

Nonsense.

I'm sure there are many women out there who would be offended by having a man tell them what is discriminatory against them and what isn't. It's a mile-deep argument, and until someone starts claiming that female bassists are inferior to male ones, or only interesting if they're attractive, surely it's not really a massive problem? After all, half the problem with '-isms' stems from them being pointed out when they're really not there.

Actually, who is the best player over 65? I reckon Charlie Haden. :)

Personally, I find listing bass players by gender as pointless as doing it by hair colour, but as she doesn't seemed to have been given a mention so far, here's to Aimee Mann. Her 'Whatever' album is one of my faves of the 90s.
