Lozz196
Just aquired a CIJ Precision, a 62 Reissue-alike. Had a band practice last night, and was so focused on the sound of my new amp set-up (Markbass Mini CMD121P & NY121) that it was only on the way home I realised that I had hardly noticed the new bass. Now to me, that is a good sign - it was effortless to play, and the sound was solid all the way through. Still got a bit of work to do on it - Badass bridge has to go, as do the 500k pots, but all in all, I`m incredibly pleased with this bass. I was always a "US Fenders are King" kinda guy, but this is my 2nd CIJ, and have to say, for playability and build quality, I don`t really see any difference. My new CIJ has new electrics, so can`t comment on the original parts, which I`ve read that some say this is where the CIJs are slightly inferior. All in all, darn glad I bought this bass - and seeing as it`s going to be my only bass, good job as well.
Pow_22
Yup, absolutely love mine. Got some genuine '76 pups winging their way to me so i can drop them in along with a NOS 76 harness. The build quality and playability is absolutely immense. BTW, i have an exact fit BBOT bridge if you need for replacing that badass?
Lozz196
Thanks very much, but already ordered one from Allparts. May call on you if it turns out to not be the right part though. Yours should sound great with those 76-ers.
risingson
Out of interest, why are you looking to be rid of the Badass bridge? And if you get round to selling it could you let me know
brensabre79
Risingson beat me to it! Yeah I'll take that Badass off yer hands if he doesn't
Highfox
Nice one. Nothing wrong with the CIJ's, a pup swap and some decent pots on the cheaper models and your away.
bremen
Yay! another satisfied customer. The CIJ Precision neck I got from Cetera is just perfect (for me).
untune
I've got the PB70US/ASH and I love it - lovely grain on the body. Recently had a bit of an accident - broke off one of the bridge screws in the body but managed to drill it out with absolutely no damage whatsoever. I rewired everything with vintage cloth wire etc, shielded to solve some buzz issues and put a new PIO cap in there, sounds great. It has a very 'sharp' sound, it apparently has a 'US vintage' pickup in there which isn't ACTUALLY a US vintage as it turns out... but a Japanese version. The bobbins are rounded and the wires are plastic coated as opposed to cloth on the proper US ones. I'm pondering whether it's worth upgrading the pots and the pikcup or if I'm just wasting my time? The neck is lovely though!

I find that they "de-Precision" a Precision, by tightening the lows, crsiping the highs, and removing some mids. Now put them on a Jazz, and all that, to my ears, makes a Jazz better. And yes, my plan is to sell, so I`ll have a look see what they go for on here, and first refusal is yours (with bren a close second )

Want it to be as 70's-ish as poss hence the upgrades (inc chrome covers, F neckplate, thumbrest etc)
Bassman Steve
That's a very interesting development. I have a '62 and a '70s and adore the '70s. I assumed mine were US pick-ups but the evidence would suggest not. Could be time to fit a genuine US pick-up or I might get a friend to have a nice word with Seymour (and I don't mean Butts). I was quite surprised when I opened it up considering the pickup is one of the main selling points of this version (along with the ash body of course!) but hence it costs a bit more than the regular ones. I had the same idea as you, and would love to get an authentic 70s in there - but as for tracking one down! You've done well to get that I like the sound of mine, strung with Roto flats atm... but I keep thinking I'd like to take a bit of the zing off the high end and have a little bit more punch in the low mids.. I've stuck an ebony thumbrest on mine, but I'll be leaving the covers off. F neckplate might be interesting though...

Pow_22
yeah, roto flats on mine too at the mo while i try and track my usuals (picato have stopped making my particular gauge). Agree with the top end, i actually thought the treble side of the pup had gone microphonic at one point. Will report back once the 76's are in

spongebob
Sounds like a great bass! Well done on the Markbass set-up as well - same as mine - swear by them, great combination.
Lozz196
Thanks, it is a great set-up, really powerful but light. Update on the bass now. I`ve just had the Nordstrand NP4 Pickup, Baddass II Bridge, and CTS 500k pots removed (pickup & bridge soon to go up for sale), and in their place go a Seymour Duncan SPB1, stock BBOT Fender Bridge, and CTS 250k pots. Now the bass sounded nice before, but for me, it now sounds like a P-Bass truly should, having got rid of the treble-makers. Man I lucked out on this bass, sounds and plays great. fretmeister
I suggest GHS Pressure Wound strings too. Amazing on a P.

I replaced the pickup in my ash PB70US with a NP4 and it sounds great to me. Mine has TI flats on it, which work very nicely too.
Lozz196
Don`t get me wrong, the Nord is a good pickup, has a nice even sound, but it`s just that bit too modern sounding for me. I found I was getting very nice Duff McKagan type sounds out of it, whereas I`m usually a much more warm "thuddy" bassist, so having heard sound-clips of many different Precision pickups, and always favouring the SD SPB1, I decided to get one. Just got back from band practice and I made the right choice, I`ve got bucket-loads of warm low-end, a real solid presence.
