daz
[quote name='ChrisB' timestamp='1351265854' post='1849496'] +1 for Aldi - they have bargain Chinese power tools in there sometimes too. I've bought a drill press, router table and bandsaw from them, quality isn't brilliant but they're more than good enough for hobby or occasional use. Keep an eye on the Thursday and Sunday specials - yesterday they had an arc welder for £40! Hmm nobody buy one of these thinking that it might come in handy for welding the sill up for your cars MOT. Its minimum range starts at 55 amps and thats far too much for modern pressed tin cars, it'll burn through it literally in a second. One of these arc welders is maybe suitable for welding back on a stray railing or something of that ilk. not suggesting theres anything wrong with it. Its just that the thing people most buy welders for is car repair, which is ok if your welding up a piece of 1/16 inch engine bracket, but not much good for any bodywork. for that you need a MIG (or preferably a decent non Chinese TIG if you can afford one. The Chinese are unfortunately not so hot on quality control when making welders as they are on guitars ) Also NEVER use any type of welder to weld galvanized steel, it has a coating of zinc oxide that turns into cynaogenic gas when its melted. You have to grind it off the steel ,back at least 3 inches from the weld area. In fact I'd never even try it unless you are a qualified welder, its too dangerous. If i recall. theres a warning video in the web somewhere with a guy who's now dead from welding galv. Be aware!! BassTractor
I've used these for decades, and love them even more than I love my ex. There's another version that I like better, with two long arms with crocodile pinchers, so you can keep two objects very close to each other. best, bert
